Default Oil changes

Not sure where to post this, so will start here.

When did you all do the first oil change? The owner's manual calls for it around 3500 miles, but some people say change it at 1,000, others say the first oil in the car is a "special break-in" oil which should be left until 3500 miles.

I'm at 2500 right now but will be taking it on a long trip soon, so could do it now before I put the extra 1500 or so miles on it. Otherwise it would have to wait until past 4,000 miles. Which would be better, do it now or wait? Advice?

I'd do it now but that's just me..
I heard there's gonna be bits of metals in the oil..from breakin..
sooner I get rid of those, the better I'll feel...

btw, first time ever heard of "special break-in oil"

I would change it, just to be on the safe side! I changed my oil at 1K, then started the whole 3K or 6 month routine, but always change it at 6 months regardless of miles. Still waiting for 10K so I can get synthetic in, long ways away,

OK. I just had a vague memory that someone said the original oil from the factory was thicker or thinner or something or other and was designed to ease the break-in period. Seemed strange to me too so I didn't know if that was a fact or not.

Anyway, sounds like there is agreement that it's better to change it earlier rather than later.

Default 1 st oil change

i would change it after 200 miles. KEEP in mind that all the loose particle s will begin to break off as the engine is running. you might have small metal shavings that are being passed through the engine. by doing it early you flush out all the small metal shavings and allow the oil to do a better job

Well, I had it done now, at about 2800 miles. Choice was either now or at 4,000 or so miles, after a long road trip. I'm in the "tire loyalty" program so have to do all required services at this dealer, to get my "free" tires.

So, s'ok. Better earlier than later, anyway.

Here's what I would suggest: At a minimum, follow the factory's maintenance schedule. If you feel better that you pamper your ride, go ahead and change it before the time/milage is up. For the cost of an oil change, it's not worth worrying over. With that said, I changed mine as soon as break-in is up. My dealer insisted that it's not required, but I insisted that I pay them to do it. And I feel good because I did it.

You PAID for your first oil change?? The first one for me was a freebie from the dealer. I thought that was pretty much standard, that the first one is on the house.

Well, yes the dealer gave credit for oil change. The 1st change was to use up the credit, effectively paid for it.
