Think about this logically as a sequential "if/then" problem. If the dash switch causes the window and seat movement it's likely a simple problem with the Tonneau latch. If you can get a helper test for 12V at the Tonneau latch. If less than 12V work your way back checking for damage to that wire.

The good news- I think you'll find the solution is much simpler. I suggest using a degreaser on the moving latch parts. Take it off if necessary. Relube it with CRC spray lithium grease, move it open/closed many times checking for binding or smooth operation. At this point it will either work or not. If after servicing the latch it still binds it's probably a minor alignment problem. Good luck!

The rear top latch is opening, it is the next step of opening the back of the soft top is where things stop. I think your idea of degreasing/lubing joints is a good one because after a couple of cycles all seems to work fine. During the summer months I never have a problem.

Thanks.

Gotcha. Different problem than I was thinking but the action is the same, just a different place. I don't have the TSB on top maintenance but as I remember it calls for basically lubing anything that moves 2X/yr. Obviously remove the vinyl cover and proceed. GL!

So if you test the motors and they read fine it could be the soft top control unit or the prox switches. If you have damaged the board let me know. You can do a jumper on the peg side.

As usual, had the dealer look at my top, estimated $2,500 for 5th bow assembly replacement. I decided to tackle myself and turns out it wasn't the 5th bow at all. In fact, it was due to shoddy work done my the dealer 3 years prior. Anyone see anything wrong with this wire on the locking mechanism?
how do you unlatch the 5th bow mine is stuck

Hi SeaNile.
I believe you are correct, if you joined the Forum 10 years ago and this thread "Scares you to Death" it's definitely not the car for you, Good luck, my friend.

Since this is such an old thread I hope some pros are still following. My 350z Roadster has the dash light for the top flashing continuously. My Service Repair Manual says I should replace the Soft Top Control Module. Does anyone know how to access the latch lock on the 5th bow or lower the top manually? When I press the top down switch, the windows go down, passenger seat moves forward and tilts and the sound coming from under the 5th bow motor sounds like a latch sliding, but nothing happens. I replaced the 5th bow motor, no change. How can I access the latch and position switches? Thanks

Angry Convertible top stuck

Top is stuck in this position
HI all, I am getting my 2004 350z ready for paint. I tried to put the top up and it got stuck in this position. Motor clicks when I press the button but nothing happens. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be the cause? 5th bow motor maybe? Thanks in advance.

This is a Nissan service bulletin and I may have added a couple of extra pages at the end that had a parts diagram. I work on mine so long I feel like I know it pretty well but I had some unique problems as well that I had to work through. Let me know if you have any questions after you go over the service bulletins. Looks like it may have scrambled the order of the pages. I suggest printing them out I'm putting them in order. Or send me an email and I'll attach it

I had my motor rebuilt and I lubricated the joints of the top and for the most part the top works. My car sits a lot (2008 with 78000 miles) so it can be a bit dodgy. I just keep cycling the switch when its in a bad mood and the top always comes around.

Neilca / All,

I had given up hope and decided I needed to replace/rebuild my 5th bow motor mainly for the following reasons.

- My top had started to not open. I would hear the clicking which I assumed was the bow lock unlatching, but then the 5th bow would not lift up off the hatch cover. It would also give me a yellow top open light when I tried to reclose the top when it would not open.
- When the 5th bow actually did activate and lift off of the hatch cover, it would often move very slowly not like in the past. This second symptom was primarily why I figured it was the 5th bow motor, after all when you get to this point in the opening process you figure all the relays and switches have been correctly triggered and we are down to having a mechanical issue, with the obvious primary suspect being the 5th bow motor.

So today a miracle happened. I figured I would go ahead and try to replace the bow motor and in preparation I decided I would remove the glass wind deflector between the two headrest roll bars. This job looks hard enough without trying to reach over the glass deflector to get under the plastic bow motor cover. I got this accomplished, which required me to manipulate both the driver and passenger seat a few times and guess what. When I went to close the top it operated like a champ without me touching the 5th bow motor. I then closed it and reopened it several times and I was shocked to see the 5th bow going up and down normally, without the hesitation and slow movement I had been recently experiencing.

I wanted to put this out there before other people spend a lot of money or attempt what looks like a pretty tedious 5th bow motor repair when perhaps that isn't the culprit in all cases. What also made me want to write this is that folks like you Neilca have also had the 5th bow motor rebuilt and apparently from what you say the top can still be temperamental. It's hard for me to believe that just my manipulating the seats made the difference, but I don't know what else I did that would effect the top opening and closing system. I will add an update if my top starts misbehaving again.

For background info, I have a 2004 Z roadster with just under 100K miles on it. I had the top replaced with a Robbins Stayfast top about 5 years ago and it has operated normally since the replacement. I also lubricate the joints periodically with lithium grease, but periodically means every few years. Also my rigid top lid cover does frequently requires multiple button presses to open if the car has been sitting for a few days, but it has been doing that for years and it isn't enough of a problem for me to want to throw money or time at it.

Anyway, hope this info helps.

I have an '04 ZR. It makes sense to me! Once I had my top problem I starting adjusting the passenger seat back & forth and leaving the passenger seat in the forward position. The top worked fine!!!
Bottom line... I think that the passenger seat needs to be left in the forward position.....or not fully back.
Cold weather will definitely affect the top from going up or down!

I do leave my passenger seat all the way back, I think I will move it forward a fuzz. My top usually will go down, I may have to cycle things a couple times but it does go down. The top, thankfully, will always close. Never had a problem with that. I think if I drove the car more and cycled the top more things would loosen up. When I drove it every day I didn't have an issue.
