almost 2 weeks w/ our new baby
I have never posted before, but I have viewed this site for at least 6 months. So I decided that when/if I finally took delivery of a Z roadster I would put up a post to give some details of the ordeal I went through to get it. My wife and I took delivery on 9/2/03 of our SB Touring roadster, 6 speed, 18" wheels, splash guards, kick plates, floor and trunk mats, and most of all vented seats. I've been busy with work and enjoying the car, but here is how the experience went getting the car. It wasn't pretty...............
Last fall my wife and I started looking at new cars. I'm more of a coupe person, but my wife kind of wanted a convertible. The first car we checked out was the TT. Very nice, but I was not thrilled with the fact that it was turbo charged, and my wife preferred a convertible. Neither of us liked the way the TT Roadster looked with the top up. TT was out. Next we checked out the S2000. My wife still loves that car. I'm 6'2", 185. I could not fit comfortably in that car, and would not agree to buy a car I couldn't fit in. S2000 was also out.
Having had a 300Z, I was interested in the new Z, so over the winter I started checking into them. I think I finally saw and drove one early this year. It was sweet, and I wanted one, but my wife still wanted a convertible. At this point the Z roadster was still just a rumor, but it sure looked like the coupe was designed with the roadster in mind or vice versa.
I started talking with my dealer seriously about getting a roadster in about February. I think at this point we all knew there was going to be a roadster. Some time after that it was officially unveiled in NY. Later pricing came out, my dealer started a waiting list, dealers were able to place orders, and pricing came out.
I only had to put down $500 to get on the waiting list. I think that was in April. As my wait started my dealership could never tell me anything about the car...... price, options, when they would be available, when they may get one, when they would be able order them...... nothing. Through this website and a few others I always knew the details of the car before the dealership. It got to the point where I would have to go into the dealership to show them pricing and options on nissannews.com. I also did this when I called Nissan customer service to try to ask them questions.
As I started asking my dealership about pricing (late June) I had read here that some people were being asked to pay over MSRP. So I asked my salesman if they planned to charge me over sticker. He said he didn't know. I told him that if they were going to I wasn't interested. I couldn't believe that after me asking about pricing, and working with them for 6 months, they were now going to try to charge me over MSRP.
On July 17th the salesman calls me to tell me that my car had been ordered. It wasn't built yet, but he said it should be delivered in September, and the dealership was going to charge me $3k over MSRP. I told him to cancel the order and I would be in to pick up my deposit. Supposedly the guy who needed to write the check was out 'til the 21st, so I showed up on that date. The salesman told me that the other 2 people on the were waiting list were going to allow themselves to be gauged (my words not his), and he credited my card the $500. As I'm getting ready to walk out, the sales manager comes over and asks me if I'm sure. I told him the story of what had gone on to that point, and that if they had told me up front about the $3k, I probably would have bought a coupe in the spring, but now my wife and I would wait 'til spring to get a roadster at MSRP (I had been told by another dealers in the area that they were also charging $3k over MSRP). The manager asked me if I would do it for $1k over..... NO. He ended up agreeing to sell it to me for MSRP. So my salesman re-charges the card. Now we start looking at the order.... No vented seats. I told him we had to have the vented seats. My wife and I weren't going to sweat on the leather if we didn't have to. The next day he tells me the car is built and we can't get it corrected, but there is a SB one coming in with same options I ordered, and it has the seats. Our original color choice was SS. I love black cars, and my wife agreed to the SB. This seemed great because this car was supposedly coming in a month earlier than the SS one, which would put it here around August 8th. On August 11th I was told that the car was now due August 29th. A few days later I got the VIN, and a piece of paper with and ETA of 8/29/03 on it. On 8/29/03 my salesman calls and tells me the car wasn't on the "pre-invoice" with the others due that day, so he didn't know when it would be in. I told him that at this point me and my wife say "if" we get the car, not "when", and if we don't get it by 9/12/03, we would wait 'til spring. We live in Mi, and I wasn't willing to pay my first 5 payments on a car in storage. On 9/2/03, the next business day after hearing they don't know when it will be here, I was checking dealer inventories in the area on nissanusa.com, and I see my car (same VIN) in my dealer's inventory. Turns out it was on a truck outside the dealership. We picked it up that night.
We love the car. The seats are my favorite thing. It seems like it was worth the wait and the hassle.
Sorry for the length of the note, but I thought that people who were out there waiting or considering ordering a roadster would be interested.
Hang in there, and DON'T PAY OVER MSRP. I have since talked to 2 dealerships in my area that aren't charging over MSRP, but I have also been told of people paying up to $5700 over around here.

One dealership in Kansas City was charging 10,000 over sticker! And they were already sold and sitting in the show room. I don't understand why they would advertise the 10K mark-up (maybe so we could think what an idiot to have paid it?)
I'm not familar with the vented seats, what is that?
