Convertible Top Alignment Issue – Left Side Pulling Too Far on Windshield (350Z
Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with my new Nissan 350Z Roadster soft top. I am new in this world but love the car ! When closing the roof, the left side goes noticeably further down onto the windshield frame than the right side, which stops earlier. The result is an uneven fit when the top is fully closed, and from above, you can see that the fabric is not sitting symmetrically – it’s much flatter on the left, while the right side has the normal curve.
Also, I’ve noticed that where the soft top meets the windshield frame (especially at the corners), it looks almost straight on the left side, instead of having that slight downward curve that matches the frame. The right side still has the proper shape and curvature, which makes the issue even more obvious. A professional told me that the whole top would need to be replaced, which would cost several thousand euros.
There’s no apparent damage or noise during the opening/closing cycle, but the alignment is clearly off.
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who’s had a similar issue.
I had it like this, it will sleep outside during this year...
Is that a new or aftermarket replacement top? I have not had a similar issue, but it appears that when it was replaced, during the step where the new canvas is stretched over the flat metal piece (over 3m double-sided tape), the installer did not do it evenly before screwing down the curved retaining piece. You might be able to re-align it. Or, if the top has some wear on it and you're due for a new top, it might be better just to get a new one.
Yeah, it doesn't look like the factory vinyl material, but I'm not sure if everything is the same for you Z guys across the pond. If it's been like that for a while, then it probably can't be removed and realigned - at least not easily.
I suppose it's possible that one of the arms could be bent or something else is not right. I'm definitely not an expert on the matter. A dedicated shop that handles roadster/soft top replacements would be the way to go.
When I did mine, I got it done in an afternoon by myself. It would go smoother with another set of hands. I went with the Robbins/Haartz Stayfast cloth top. Whew - I just checked prices and they have definitely gone up quite a bit. I imagine shipping over there would be even worse. Maybe there's an alternative European manufacturer over there?
I would stick with cloth or canvas over the cheap OEM vinyl material.
1500€ for alpaga, expensive now but another will be poor quality. For 600€ on amazon you have one or 200€ on AliExpress (same manufacturer I think, just drop shipping on amazon). I’ll put it myself in many days but will save money with your tutorials
EDIT : seen that one. Seems less expensive even if I deliver in France but no twillfast available only stayfast.

Thanks in advance – I can share photos if needed.
Your soft top is likely misaligned or unevenly tensioned. Check the frame, hinges, and side latches—small misadjustments can cause one side to sit lower and the fabric to stretch unevenly. A specialist can often realign or retension the top without needing a full replacement.

Hi! What you’re experiencing is likely a soft top alignment issue, not necessarily a problem that requires full replacement. Often, the fabric tension or the roof frame is slightly off, causing one side to sit lower and the fit to appear uneven. A specialized convertible shop can usually adjust the frame and tension so both sides sit symmetrically. Before spending thousands on a new top, I would recommend having a soft top specialist check the alignment and tension. Many issues like yours can be corrected for a fraction of the cost. Make sure to show them photos from multiple angles to illustrate the asymmetry.

hello, thank you for answers, I will see with a professional in soft top to see that because the wind blows inside when I drive.
