Cool Xbox Navi Mod!! - Big thanks to Reefkpr

This has been a long time in coming. I have had it done for about a week, but no time to edit the write-up and video demo. My nav mods work great!

It is an excellent thing to have in my car. I have spent time tweaking the Xbox and now have it fairly streamlined for in-car media use. Note that Reefkpr did this before me and helped out tremendously with my process.

Too big of write-up to post here, so did dedicated page for it. Here is the link...

There is also a 75mb Video Clip demo of this that I would like to post, but am lacking for web storage. Let me know if anyone can provide space to host it.

OK, so to get this thread back on track, JC, is that a 7998 you're using? I don't remember that unit having an AUX in. How'd you wire the sound into it? Did you use a cd-changer adaptor? Looks like a killer mod. I really like it. How do you find the resolution on the screen? I remember others having done a similar mod to this and having complained a lot about the picture quality of the nav lcd. Only thing I'd recommend is ditching that ugly Metra dash kit and getting the American International one. Looks 100% better and makes your stereo harder to steal. Do you find yourself playing video while driving? I think this would be cool to house my collection of MP3's for sure. Really like what you've done!

Yes, deck is a CDA 7998. Before the Xbox I was just using the Apline AI-net cable adapter for my Ipod Aux input. I tried to just use a "y" splitter to get both Xbox and Ipod into the same input, but different impedance levels made Xbox not work. So I bought an Alpine KCE-410C which is an AI-net box that gives you two separately adjustable AUX inputs and even two additional CD changer inputs if you had use for them. Anyway, now I just use the "SOURCE" button on my deck to select "Auxiliary" and then I use the "BAND" button to toggle back and forth between the iPOD and the Xbox Audio. I demonstrate this in my video demo, but have not found anyone with space to host the 75mb clip for me yet.

Anyway, about the screen, the video signal is Crystal clear (absolutely no discernible distortion). There are very minor artifacts (intermittant very faded oscillating line) that are unaviodable and caused by the inverter. These are almost unnoticeable with the power filter I used and the Monster inverter.

I do not play videos while driveing, but when I am listening to MP3's, the screen allways has cool visualizations going or slideshows of my favorite pictures.

If you could send me a link to the American International dash kit, I would appreciate it or any suggestions to post my 75mb video clip.

I want nav

I need to get off my lazy a$$ and load linux on my Xbox and complete the nav piece, don't really know what I am waiting on. I guess for football season to be over so I can actually have the time to do it. I should have got a touch screen I knew I was going to regret that decision.
As for the scratching the monitor, I didn that in my last car. I was trying to get the last piece of protective film that was stuck in the upper part, I used this tiny screwdriver and I thought I was removing it but the whole time the white i was seeing was me scratching my screen, it drove me crazy i had to buy another one, I was the only thing I constantly started at every time I got in the car. Granite, I didn't have to purchase a factory nav screen, quite a bite of difference in price I am sure. I sold it to a guy on the Maxima board and he loved it, said he didn't even see it. Just goes to show you not everyone is the same but I am **** and it drove me crazy.

Credit to bigfatjeffk for his pic...

you can adjust how far the unit sticks out, so you can set it to be flush when closed. looks really great in my car. one day, i'll take pix... [/lazyness]

i know you can pick it up for ten bucks on buy.com. somebody else said they found it online for seven. i'm sure if you googled it, you'd get lots of hits. i really like your set-up. i'll have to consider this now... thanks again for showing it off!
