Default 2 channel or 4 Amp

Anyone have suggestions on this. I am in process of upgrading the amp for my front speakers (6 speakers). Have option of getting 2 channel amp (120W x2) to drive components and using Head Unit to drive rear fill speakers and second set of tweets (ambient).
Or I can get a 4 channel (120W x 4) to drive all the speakers. My H/U (Excelon) manual states you will get better sound quality by turning OFF the internal amp which is why I considering 4 channel, but I wonder how accurate that is and would rather not spend the money, add weight, and possibly have to rewire to 0 gauge for the 4 channel.

I say go with the 2 channel for the fronts and use your headunit to power your rears for fill. You're going to end up fading to your fronts for a better sound stage anyway

Thanks Deceit, that damn HU owners manual has me worried but I will try it out. It is a waste to have 240W RMS for the stupid rear speakers, don't you think.

Absolutely.

I have my rears faded almost completely to my front on my stock blose setup. I'm waiting on my JL 300/2 and Basslink to get here to put my MB Quart's and the Alpine 9833 in to say good bye blose. I do not even plan on putting any speakers in the rear. Maybe some cheap pos's just for slight fill

Sounds like you will have an awesome setup Deceit. I have been running my system off of a 60x4 amp and a 300x1 for the sub. I find that most of the time I have the volume 95% up front..but sometimes if there is a lot of road noise, or I am chatting with someone, or listening to a talk show, I like a little more from the rear. I don't think any more than 10-20W is necessary though.
Like they say: "Everyone likes it in the front and only some people like it in the rear!" ;-)

If your planning of adding bass or already have bass get the 4 channel. That way you can turn the crossover so that the speakers wont play bass frequencies and you can drive them harder w/o distortion and fear of them breaking. If you are not plannin on getting bass I would still recommend the 4 channel that way at least you have equal power going throughout that way the front isnt overpowered and the rears lack. Even though the Z dosent have the best placement for rear speakers they still produce a good portion on sound. More so for the mid bass to mid levels before sound waves become more directional then omnidirectional. anything about 2500Hz (voices and UP) are gonna be directional and you will hear from your fronts.

my $0.02 get a 4 channel, cause sooner or later your gonna want bass.

But I got's massive bass already. A 350W ALpine mono amplifier to a 12" MB Quart sub.

I'll have to think it over I guess.

go 2 channel... that stuff about the internal amp off is true but not noticeable to the normal human ear only to lab instruments

cool. when I get the 2 channel I will try it with the amp on and see how it sounds. If it does seem to alter the signal I can always run the rear speakers from the RAF output of the Diamond Audio crossovers.
