New amp/speakers... still sounds horrible

Its definately the HU, get a new one. The stock HU blows in general, but any time you get funky with signal converters and what not, trying to rig a stock HU to an aftermarket amp, you typically lose a lot of sound quality.
As for the speakers suddenly sounding better, they dont. You're just getting used to them
