Default Any thoughts on a good (but not too pricey) radar detector?

I've heard that the Valentine 1 is this and that...I just think it may be too pricey for me.

I only want to spend no more than $200.00 on one....Any suggestions on which model/brand to get?

P.S. I have a Cobra now...but it's not working properly...seems to be damaged...although I never dropped it.

Thanks!

http://www.beltronicspro.com/rx55.html

Thats the cheapest I would buy... the V1 and 8500 x50 are worth the extra money IMHO but if you get anything worse than that rx55 I would just save your money for defensive driving classes and court fees.

With so much at stake (insurance, license, points, etc, etc), opting for the cheapest radar detector is false economy! take it from someone who owns one. Bite the bullet, buy a Valenitne radar detector and enjoy the relative peace of mind. You won't regret it.

ave the Escort Passport 8500 - very good, bought in on net for $300. worth every bit of it. It will pick up from front and rear - for a distance of up to 5 miles. Even works in mountain areas. A couple years ago I was zipping up a nice winding mountain 4 lane highway at 80 to 85 mph. Radar started sounding - I let up on the gas - when at got around a bend at the crest of the mountain a cop was sitting there with his gun pointed at me. (couurse I was doing speed limit then! LOL )
When that thing goes off good I will cut the speed for 5 min to see if it beeps again- if it does - I will keep speed down. If not = have fun!

Get two!

One good one (use it all the time)
One cheap one (to give to the 5-0's if you get caught)
I love my valentine, but I keep a Beltronics for the piggy's!

I wish it had the directional arrows of the V1 but it was rated slighly higher on KAband in a few tests that I saw when I was looking into buying.
Bottom line Beltronics(forget mod #), Valentine, or Escort/passport8500 are your choices everything else isn't worth buying IMO. ebay if you can't dig the extra$100 up.

You could get a new 8500 X50 for about 260 if you are willing to pay that much.
