Default NAV questions......

Do you find that your NAV system is telling you to go through a lot of small streets rather than the main roads? No matter where I set the NAV to go, it always tell me to go through lot of small streets and stop signs, and it's very annoying. Is there a set up you can change that? Or all the NAV is supposed to do that?

Are you choosing a faster route when programming your destination?

I use the NAV pretty frequently (though I've been using the Z to look for a new home recently). Only time I've had issues is when I switched from fasest time to shortest route. Then it took me though some weirdness. Other than that it's been great. Plus my co-workers are always checking out the hatch it lives in. I swear you'd think it was cooler than the G35 retractable the way these guys drool over it.

You do realize you can set your destination options:

Shortest Time
Shortest Distance
Minimize Toll Roads
Minimize Freeway
Use Time Restricted Roads
Use Ferry

The two I use most often are Shortest Time and Shortest Time combined with Minimize Freeway (say during rush hour).

Also, you can take a different route if you want and the Nav will recalculate it's directions as you drive.

Read the manual, as it has a lot of interesting information.

If you are getting directions that take you through a bunch of small roads, you probably have your Nav system set to Shortest Distance.

Try it out on Mapquest some time, you'll get some really "weird" driving instructions if you choose to go shortest distance rather than shortest time.

Hope that helps.

I minimized my NAV sending me down side roads by doing two things:

1) make sure you have selected "Fastest Time"
2) go into your Navigation settings, and change your average highway speed setting to a higher number. The factory default is 55 mph. If you set it up to 70 mph, the computer will be more likely to use the freeways to minimize the time.

Good luck.

Ding! Learned something new. I've been using it for about 4 months now and didn't know that there was an "average highway speed" setting.

Thanks!

Mapquest: An "online" navigation system.
