Default Rear brake light rattle

So I got the entire trunk hushmatted and now have no rattles except for that rear brake light housing that sits right under the rear windshield. What have you guys done to take care of this because or suggest be done? It's very annoying...

This has been discussed before. I think most people take it off and put some type of rubber or foam around the edge or RTV but you better search for it if you want to know for sure.

I took 2 tiny pieces from my wife's foam yoga mat and just shoved them between the glass and the plastic on the sides of the housing. Works great. You only need about a 1/4" x 1/4" square.

Just don't tell the wife! lol

I've had a lot of trouble with the "quick search" lately but try clicking on advanced search next time- it should work fine.

i opened the site in Internet Explorer and it works fine...been reading up on it, seems that everyone with any kind of system gets the rattle which is like 90% of all rattles in the car...now i'm wondering if i should go and get my windows tinted first before i apply silicone to hold the cover down

Yes, you can see it but it doesn't rattle. With the window tint (35%) and my strutbar covered with fabric...it's dark enough back there that you don't notice unless you're specifically looking for it. That's good enough for the time-being.

Oh wow, maybe that's the "rattling" noise I hear. How did you figure out that it was the rear brakelight? You guys are talking about the rear brakelight at the very top of the rear windshield , right? (i.e. the "3rd" brakelight)

Yes, that's it. To test this, just pump your tunes until you hear some rattling. Open the hatch and put something between the center brake light and window (I used a rag at first). Close the hatch and listen for the same rattle. If it's gone, that's the culprit.

I bought a small tube of clear RTV silicone from the local auto parts store. It's the kind that comes with a small attachment that screws onto the head of the tube. The attachment allows you to dispense the silicone as a real thin layer. If you hop in the trunk and take you time dispensing the silicone around the edges of the brake light, it'll seal it up real nice. No more rattle.

you can simply turn your stereo up then when you hear some rattling, reach back over there and either hold that plastic piece against the glass or bend it down

Just take it off... Thats what I did... You just have to get use to the extra light in the cabin... However, I love how it lights up the rear... When you do it you will see what I mean...

What does that look like from the outside? That's an interesting option.

This pics sucks but here is what mine looks like. I had to darken the pic to get past the glare on the rear window but you can see the 2 purple pieces of foam I have placed between the plastic/window. I haven't bothered to make it more discrete yet but will soon.

Unrelated: You can also (kinda) see my strutbar which I covered with fabric. My tint is only 35% but covering that silver pieces darkens the whole back of the car.

ah, so you just tinted the entire windshield? you didn't decide to go around the brake light? does the light still shine through? the way you have it, it's practically impossible to tell you have foam pieces on there, good work

i guess if i was going to tint the entire thing, i'd just compeltely take that plastic light diffuser thing out altogether and disconnect the rear brake light

They tinted the whole rear window and the center light is still plenty bright. 35% is legal and my pic doesn't show it realisticly. Black car, black interior, black strutbar....it looks darker than it is. The LED's of the center light are still quite visible.
