Default My new system with silver dash kit...

I just spent about 12 hours doing a custom install in my Daytona Blue Performance. There's nothing especially fancy about my setup, except that I believe I'm the only person so far to paint the Metra dash kit. My head unit so closely matched the interior, I couldn't stand to install it into a black plastic surround. So I thought I'd post a couple pics for folks to reference.

I installed the following components:
Rockford-Fosgate RFX9400 head unit
Delphi SkyFi XM receiver
Monster iCable for iPod
Motorola OEM Professional Install Kit for V60c

Head Unit & XM Receiver:

Concealed Monster iCable (for iPod):

Rust-O-Leum Paint that matches Z:

Nice job...where did you find that HU? And does it have an AUX input on the front of the unit (the reason for the Monster iCable, I assume)?

Wow! I didn't know Nissan used Rustoleum! That must be how they saved so much money! I wonder how many cans it takes to do one whole car!

I got the head unit from eBay. Rockford-Fosgate discontinued it a while ago, but a few still pop up every now and then on there. I really like it because it has 10 preset buttons on the front, and 2 AUX inputs. The new RFX9400 is nice as well, but they've changed the color to a darker grey.

Both aux in's are on the back of the unit. You can't tell from my horrible picture but I drilled a hole in the ashtray to allow the Monster iCable to go beneath the center console and up into the back of the stereo.

Hey Bonz, bring your car over to my place this weekend and we'll find out. I'll even pay for the paint!

What kit is that you have on your car?

No, no, no, no, no. I spray painted the Metra dash kit before installing it in the car. Have you seen the kit? I don't understand why Metra used that crappy black plastic. I would've gladly paid double for some that matched something in the interior. It's like the set out intentionally to make it look out of place. The silver looks much better.

The pic in my sig isn't my car. It is the photoshopped version of the NISMO S-Tune car (the silver one with the multicolored decals). Someone 'shopped it into Brickyard for me. I have the kit sitting in my garage in boxes. I'm still waiting for my Top Secret front diffuser to get here (sometime in Feb.) so I can get it all painted and installed at once.

How does crappy black plastic look out of place in a dashboard / console thats made almost entirely of crappy black plastic? I'm keeping my metra kit black.

Scott-
I've read a lot of your posts recently, and they all seem to be trying to stir trouble. Please cut out the unnecessary and rude comments. Thanks,

I shouldn't have said "crappy." It's just that everything in the car is either dark grey plastic or light grey aluminum/plastic. The doors have aluminum, the center console has aluminum, the driver's side dash has aluminum. But the center dash, no aluminum. Since I was adding a head unit to bring that aluminum color to the dash, it seemed wasteful to swaddle it in black, where there was no other black.

Perhaps your Metra was light than mine. Mine was black, black, black. Dark black. It just looked really out of place when I installed it. If I had known it was going to be that dark, I would've probably gotten a different receiver.

Yeah, part of the problem is that it is reflective paint, so the flash really brightened it up. As far as matching, it matches the trim around the HVAC controls pretty well. I can't comment on how it would match a CS though. I've never seen one. Actually, my Z has only been within a mile of 1 other Z since it left the showroom, and that one was black.

As the sayings go: drive it like you (1) own it, (2) stole it, or as you would a (3) rental or (4) your parents car. But remember this, it's yours! Enjoy.
