hey guys, just an idea, but our cars COULD have had nav, and if it did, it would have played through our speaker system. so... why cant we wire the sound into whatever port the stock nav was wired into?
just something to think about, If no one else has any ideas Ill look through the service manual to see what the specifics are on that but I got lab now.

rodion, I think UPS is not the best solution. That lithium battery is cool but hella expensive. We will start seeing more lithium type batteries hit the market real soon. I seriously think that removeable media such as a smart card or USB hard drive is the best solution since it's fast and small.
ares, that's exactly what I'm going for with my install. I am getting a new head unit that has RCA input for auxilery and I will send my speaker out from the PC to it. I'm not a big fan of the FM modulator.

In the pics of the Bose unit I've seen, there are two unused plugs on the back. I was always assuming one might be for the Nav, and the other I was hoping was for steering wheel controls (which, ares, may allow for your "soft" controls with a converter).
Somebody the other day posted here he worked at Clarion, and had the manuals for the Bose head unit. He was going to post what the outlets were for, but I haven't seen him post back. I'll have to dig that thread up and see if he has checked.

solid state drives
hmm.. when i said solid state i meant a compact flash drive.
a 1GB compact flash drive is about what.. 200-300 bucks? not too bad if you look at the advantage of never having to "reboot" again.
i don't know if you could make windows boot off of it though.. but i could see winxp booting from the compact flash drive and enable IDE devices (in this the 2nd HD for mp3s and DVD for nav+movies) after it boots up.
that way you'd never have to worry about the onboard computer when you shut the engine off.
anyone experimented w/ that?

For this purpose, there's no difference between flash disk and a hard drive as far as the OS is concerned.

all of you looking to get one, and want to go the via route.
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...threadid=13142
someone sellin a via 800 for 80$, I think thats a deal... not sure, but figured Id pass along what I saw.
and anyone wanting a UPS system... this is about as good as Ive found, a tad uner 300$ tho. but skys the limit on this bad boy. dont forget youll need like 24 hours to recharge a single battery... you cant run a computer for 24hour on maybe 90minutes of charging time each day. even 12 hours at night plugged into a wall would be tough.

Here is a link with some nice LCD screens for awsome prices:
http://www.etronics.com/index.asp?store=electronics
I can't post the direct link since the message board cuts it off but go to the above site, than to Car Electronics (on the left bar) and than to Mobil Video. They have some nice prices and a large selection.

ordered it yesterday morning itll be here on thursday according to fedex, or ups, whichever.
I did not get the bright option... that would have been the straw the broke the monkeys back, I have a hunch that the ultra bright option is just an addon, that I could send the screen back to spysupply(talked with the guy and hes real nice) and have installed at any time. in the mean time, Im going to tape a sheet of tin foil to the back of the screen and its sposed to increse it by ~50nits. kinda cool.
however thats only the TSV thats sold out, he still has 700TS, 30$ less but doesnt have the 2 av inputs.
oh also I have 20 and 5% tint in my car, so Im a bit darker inside than normal.

This dude has a very detailed description of his EPIA-based in-car computer: http://www.pcms.be/golf/
Lots of good close-ups, very well designed site. He talks about ground loop isolation - something I didn't think of until now. Many useful links, one of them - to this site that sells Xenarc 700TSV for $580: http://www.hometechwonders.com/flatpanel.html (same price as spysupply007.com)

Here's some that can be used with fm modulator or similiar devices.
http://www.pie.net/sec11sb4.htm
You might be able to find it for cheaper elsewhere?
Radioshack also sells them....if you want to go local.

Update on my system:
I finally received all of my parts yesterday (except for screen) and got it put together and OS installed. I have had no problems so far with the power supply and wattage (fingers crossed). I'm running the M9000 w/slim dvd-rom, 256mb, 2.5 hard drive in a Casetronic case.
Here are some initial observations...dvd's play fine although on occasion there were slight lags. A couple of thoughts come to mind on solving this, first I might try a PCI graphics card to take some of the graphic proccessing resources off the main CPU and/or I might try and load Win98 on this machine. I know, I know XP is better, but I'm looking at it from a system resource standpoint. Also, I am using a 34" IDE cable thats run outside of the case for the DVD-ROM (secondary master). My plans were to mount this drive seperate from the unit in the mail slot. I might need to try a shorter cable to see what effect that might have.
All in all, very pleased so far. Haven't really loaded to many things on it yet until I decide on the right OS to use.
