I was thinking that you could use an identical power supply to the one you already have that came with your case. Those go for about $35 I think.

Have one of the power supplies feed the mobo, and a DVD drive. Have the other one feed the hard drive, and maybe the LCD.

I know those Opus units are way expensive, but since you already have half of what I am describing, I think your additional cost is only about $35.

Thats a good idea actually. I thought about that at one point, mainly because my list of things I wanted to add (USB) was growing and I knew one 60W supply would not be enough. I guess one pain to this method though is that I would want another AC adapter so I can get this all working in my house first, and because I plan to start with a power inverter until I'm comfortable with harding wiring the the DC-DC supply

Here is what I was thinking about for an AC-DC supply:

Scafremon, as has been said before, the OEM version is actually the full license of the OS, and requires no other license. You do not have to put the old OS install disc in to do an install.

As has also been said, you typically have to buy hardware at the same time. The requirements used to be a bit more restrictive, such as a hard drive, motherboard, processor, etc. Now, it is pretty basic. I've even seen places where you can only buy something as small as a cable.

BTW, for hardware orders, I recommend www.newegg.com and www.mwave.com for computer parts. I've ordered a ton of stuff from both of those places over the last 5+ years. Their prices are always good as is their service.

A update on some stuff I found for DC-DC power supplies. These are ones mentioned over at www.mp3car.com: These are quotes directly from the manufacturer....sooo lets find some cheaper prices now!

I'm thinking that the 100W version would be just right for the M9000, leaving room for additional USB components to be added. The obvious catch, is that I don't think it has an AC adapter so to test you would have to go ahead and wire this into the car. This might just be ok though, as I can continue to setup my machine with the casetronic one in the house, then once I get my screen installed move it out to the car and switch to the bigger power supply...hhmmmm.

all my stuff came except for the screen, it says it was delivered, but I donno where...

pics to come, it should work very nicely, the heat sink is MEAN looking, and the inverter is quite small, which is good. all in all it couldnt way more than 10lbs, and I dont see what is going to take up all that much space.

so anyone want a regular 3.5" 40gig 7200rpm hard drive? I ordered it, then changed my mind to a 2.5, but now I gotta return the 3.5 and pay 15% restocking fee...

Why would you need TWO ethernet ports? The new M2 coming out has two ethernet ports.

They must be aiming at router-building fools like myself - this kind of setup is very convenient for broadband sharing.

Well I finally broke down and ordered my Xenarc VGA screen. I just finished up the Auto PC tonight, so far it's working great. I haven't tried it in the car yet to see if the power supply is going to be an issue...I will cross that bridge when I get there.

I did determine that my DVD-ROM drive didn't like being connected to a 34" IDE cable. I had to scale back to a shorter cable, so I might hold off on the external mounting of the drive for now.

Thanks for the post on that M2 board. That PCMCIA card slot would be great for wire-fi (whichever kind). You'd still have a PCI slot, and wouldn't have to use one of those USB attachment boxes (although there may be some advantages to those, too).

BTW, anybody see this?:

Here is a bit more info

2"x7"x10"

That would definitely work under the seats, or maybe the back slots Should be interesting seeing the pricing in a few weeks.

Holy smokes! I think I'll be waiting for the M2 to come out. I'm glad I waited for this news. That parallel port really bugged me, and the PC card reader together with the CF are just a blessing! Thanks for the post!

Some cameras and stuff like that. Pretty much outdated now with the new USB 2.0 standard.

Heh, it is firewire, and many Mac users and digital video camera users would disagree with you in it being outdated.

It is often used for video applications, such as digital video cameras, etc.

most digital cameras I see now are using USB...as you guys have basicly said.

only reason I ask is my mobo came with a PCI card that adds 3 of those slots, and I see no reason to even waste the slot or the space if it has no use. so I dont think I will put it in. thanks for the help everyone.

I'm talking digital camcorders, not regular cameras. Firewire has been the standard for several years, there. Some are starting to show up in USB2, but for streaming video many still use firewire. It isn't going anywhere for awhile.

Also, iPods, for instance, are only firewire.

oh, well I plan to put a camera, but I actually was thinking more along the lines of a webcam mounted in the grill. not real important tho. if I decide to use firewire, the card is always there. but by the time I get around to that, I think Ill be able to do whatever I want with a USB.

You brought up a real good point here, and one I have been spending alot of time thinking about. If I set up my computer for strictly DC power, then it would be quite a pain to do 'bench' work on the PC.

But like you said, you could buy the $61 kit that includes the AC adaptor. You could now hardwire (2) sets of DC inputs in the car, and you would just have to use two AC adaptors when you are in the house.

Does this sound feasible? A good idea, or just another bungee-cord-front-license-plate-mount idea?

gonna be tough to find a ac-dc converter to convert 60watts dont ya think?

might be easier to just buy a regular power supply, you can get a cheap one for 35$, probably less than 2 ac-dc converters, then plug it into where the dc supplies were and go for it. might take a bit longer to plug in rather than just 2 plugs for the dc converters, but its much cheaper, and how often will you be bringing the PC inside to do work on it?
