i just put a alpine head unit in my z. i went driving around with the radio off today and kept hearing my dash ratteling is this normal or did i do something wrong. i think it's coming from my HU

 

Do you have a single DIN unit? If so, it is most likely due the mounting kit (e.g. Metra) which does not allow you to use the OEM radio brackets, so the headunit is supported by just plastic pieces. I had the same problem with my kenwood single DIN. You can try to use foam/velcro like material to reduce the rattles.

I think I had that problem too. Ended up putting a small piece of packing foam under the back end of the HU.
