After market upgrade help
Hey guys just purchased my new Z about a week ago and I’m already starting to buy some upgraded audio equipment. Have a few questions or recommendations from you guys. I have a friend that’s selling 2 Kicker solo L5 10" subs for $150. Is it worth it to try and fit 2 of those in the car? Or am I better off with say one solo L7/L5 or a JL 10w7? I’m currently building a custom box to fit up under the back strut bar and have managed to work out about 1.55 CF of air space for a sealed box so I think im good there.
Last two questions-
what should I do with the Bose sub currently in the car? Wire it up to the new deck or take it out?
And does any one have a pic or the Pioneer Premier DEH-P880PRS installed in a Z. I think it was one of the best looking/closest matching cd players to the interior of the Z.
So far I have-
JL 500/1 Amp
Pioneer Premier DEH-P880PRS
Thanks

If your going for SQ I would install (1) good quality sub. Dual subs will increase volume and pressure but at the expense of SQ. I would use a single 10W6v2 instead of a 10W-7. If you must have a W-7 get the 8W7. Don't waste your money on Kicker, JL's are twice the sub as far as SQ is concerned, but that is my opinion.
A JL 500/1 on a single JL 10W6-V2 will sound incredible.
As far as the stock Bose sub, it might make a great frisby. No really, loose it.

Worst advice you could have given. Sorry

Here's the truth:
Two subs will both increase maximum output capability, as well as decrease distortion.
Here's why:
BL vs X (from Adire Audio(TM))

Assuming you have a nice symmetrical compliance curve, your subwoofer is operating at minimum distortion at its lowest level (Small signal). As you increase the volume, you increase the ouput, which makes the subwoofer move more (X). As you travel along X (symmetrical or not), your T/S parameters change, your motor force changes, and your distortion inherently increases.
Simple fact: In almost all drivers/transducers, the less movement, the better. Adding more drivers only alleviates the need for more excursion (inherently reducing distortion). Provided your amplifier can cleanly drive two woofers cleanly, and you can provide them with the required airspace, you are almost always better off with two, four, ten.... etc drivers .. rather than one.

Alright I just bought a 10w7 from the local Jl dealer for a decent price and I’m now ready to install everything in the car.
Currently I will be installing the following items.
Pioneer Premier DEH-P880PRS (with Ipod Control Interface and PAC SWI-PS)
Custom fit box with JL 500/1 powering 1 10w7
Now this is my current issue-
I have searched though a ton of threads here and have mainly found conflicting answers to this question. If I keep the original Bose speakers can I just plug in the harness that came with my HU or would it be better to rewire from the HU to the existing speakers? I plan on removing the Bose sub from the car also. I see a lot of people say it needs to be rewired others say it sounds fine and just use the harness. The stereo shop said I should rewire. I would just like a definite answer on what will sound the best. I plan on changing the Bose speakers out sometime down the road but not anytime soon. Thanks

I put my alpine in my car without anything for a a couple weeks while I waited for the rest of my system to get here. (I have bose) You didnt mention that you were replacing your other speakers... IF you are not you need to run the bose amps on the system for the speakers to sound ok, and you'll either need an adapter that is about 50 bucks, or you'll have to be careful because you can blow the bose system with an aftermarket headunit (you are sort of doubling the power output to the speakers, what ever the headunit pushes plus the bose amps).
I thought about keeping the bose sub for "mid-bass)
