I wonder if that is the way to do this: A “permanent” mount that looks at best to be a temporary mounting. That would probably look ugly. It would be OK for an off-road vehicle with a sorts of other junk (CB radio, incline-meter, big roof-rack, etc.), but not so good on the Z’s minimalist dash.

Maybe you could use the space occupied by the flimsy passenger side folding cup holder. I think it would look better to have the GPS mounted here on an adjustable arm. This way you could fold it out of the way when it’s not in use. You could even build a folding arm that retracts into a designated space. That would be far less obtrusive.

Here is a site where you can buy mounts.

These can be modified to suit your specific needs.

…Just offering some ideas. --Spike

^^ Looks good. Your mount also provides another advantage. A passenger can easily rotate the GPS for operational access. Nice setup. --Spike

Here are a couple of different setups. These are all Garmin units. The gps above the radio is a 2730, the one attached to the cupholder is the new Zumo. The one to the right of the shifter is a Nuvi 350 and the one in the last pic to the left of the steering wheel is a Nuvi 660. The wires are loose since I'm always changing mounting locations and units for testing.

Thanks for the response but these set ups look clumbsy and sloppy to me. i would like to hide wires and connectors as best as possible.

I have a garmin. Im stuck with sticking it into the window because it has a power wire attatched to it to charge it that is on the holder. Its not that bad. The only ****ty thing is that when i hit a hard bump, it may fall and knock my stick out of gear.

First of all Geno thanks for the pics. I was wondering if you knew which garmin models fit in the cubby? I'd like to get a unit with a larger screen (3.5" touchscreen seems small to me), but I want one that will fit in the cubby for the purpose of easy concealment.

Thanks

Any of the Garmin units fit the upper/forward cubby in the Z. Your best pick with a Garmin unit is the Nuvi 66X series. Here you get a 4.3" (diagonal screen measurement), touch-control, and a lot more. Perfect fit.

I would also recommend hard-wiring the power supply, and consider the advantage of a remote antenna.

--Spike

EDIT: If you want a larger screen that is fixed in place (not transportable), you need the Garmin GVN 52 and a 7" NTSC LCD screen mounted in the upper/forward cubby space. With this said, I don't think that is what you are asking about.

Yes I'm going to hardwire it so it turns on with the car like my radar detector. I plan on putting it on the dash behind the 3 small gauges so I can hide the power wire behind the dash like with my Sirius radio or put it in the cup holder on the passenger side so I can hide the wire thru the cup holder and thru the dash. These are just ideas, I'm looking for the cleanest way to mount it, hopefully it will be delivered today. Anyone else use these mounting/wiring methods?

Spike thanks for the advice. I want a touch screen unit, so the Nuvi660 sounds like the best option.

Thanks

After some research it seems only the standard holder offers the ability to charge this GPS unit while holding it

The included holder also seems the smallest, maybe its better to just stick with it and mount that to the dash?

The Nuvi 660 or 680 will fit in the cubby along with the Streetpilot 2XXX series but its a tight fit. The catch is on the the 2620 and the 2720 is that the speaker is in the power cable. The Nuvi's power can be connected to the bracket or on the side of the unit. The down side to directly wiring the unit is that you will cut off the GTM 20 which is intergrated to the 12vt cig cord. The GTM 20 is what gives you the traffic interface and comes with the unit. Its not cheap at around $200.
I've thought about doing the GVN 52 interface or trying to mount the Streetpilot 7200 in the cubby.

Well it seems like the included suction cup holder looks the best (front the inside of the car). I attached it as far down on the winshield as possible and besides seeing some of the white suction cup from the outside it looks pretty good. It is hard wired to the ignition so i dont have a wire running to the cig lighter and theres still enough room around it to remove it from the cradle at night. Given the high dash and the low seats, you barley notice the cradle or suction cup. Im satisfied as this being the cleanest possible look without making it a major project.

What do you guys think?
