Help!! Question about HDMI input for Sony KDL46XBR3 and PS3
I need a little help with my new TV. I just recently bought a new Sony KDL46XBR3 and I'm trying to hook my PS3 into it with a HDMI cable. I have a choice of video 3, 7, or 8 as my HDMI inputs. I tried hooking the cable from my PS3, without the RCA cables connected because I thought it might do an automatic bypass, into each of the HDMI inputs and can not get a picture to come out cycling through the TV/Video settings. Is there something I am missing? I was playing around with the settings and I tried to set the picture to 16:9 for high def. source from the default 4:3 but couldn't. Does this need to be set? If so how do you do it because the wide button doesnt work and the TV keeps telling me that the feature is currently not available. I also turned the auto wide feature to off so that the tv won't automatically assign 4:3 to input 3, 7, and 8. What am I doing wrong? Can somebody out there with a KDL46XBR3, KDL46XBR2, KDL40XBR2 help me out?
Edit: I it matters I don't have a HD signal from my cable company yet, but that shouldn't matter right? That should be independent from the HDMI input signal?

you mean the PS3 is not showing a picture on your new TV?
1. On the PS3 set your resolutions, select 1080i, and 720p, 480p is default.
2. Select the correct input on your TV, if you are using HDMI input 3, then set the tv to that input.
If you're still not getting any picture and the ps3 is on, maybe you set it the ps3 to 1080p, if you set the wrong resolutions it will not work. Standard cable is probably 4:3 so you will get the grey bars. You need an HD signal to get a 16:9 picture, you can stretch the picture but that's different, that's just formatting. If you have the free blue-ray taledega nights movie, try that out.

Hmmm, maybe that is my problem. I ran through the PS3 manual and on screen menu but didnt find a setting to select 1080i. I'll look again tomorrow since I'm not at home right now. But let's assume I figure it out and set the PS3 correctly to output the HD signal, Will the TV pick it up automatically and allow me to go 16:9? Thank you for your help.
yeah, in the setup menu on the ps3 there is a setup video section. You have to select the resolutions your tv can handle, or else it will not use the higher resolutions. After you do that, it should be fine and display the 16:9
oh yeah, i forgot to tell you, if you didn't set the resolutions, you probably didn't select the video out. You have to select on the ps3 setup which output type you have, you should select HDMI since that's what you're using.
That's probably your problem, it's set to composite video (RCA) as default.

Ah thanks for your help man. I looked over the PS3 manual and that thing isn't worth the paper it was printed on. My last video game system was the Nintendo 64. I'm a bit behind with these gaming consols.
I'm probably not going to play the PS3 all that much either. I bought it mainly for the Blue Ray that's why I picked up set of HDMI cables at $128/each, and I was getting pissed off that I couldn't get the signal to go through.

Yeah, I agree. Once you've spent that much money, what's a little more? And cables ARE important, I just think HDMI's are obscenely overpriced. I've got a 65" Sony (rear projection) that I got about 3 years ago that only has a DVI out, so I have to use a DVI-HDMI adapter for video, which (unknowingly) saved me a few bucks. I still like my optical for sound.

Yeah I guess I screwed myself with this TV since it has 3 HDMI inputs...lol that was one of the reasons why I got it.

I really like the optical option too and I think it's noticeably better only from a direct source. I use a Roku M2000 media soundbridge with optics from my PC and it doesn't sound as clean.
I thought about getting optical cables for my pc, but I just never bothered.
Well I think these are just a bit too much:

If I went with those that'll be over a grand in cables only
It is crazy how much these cables can cost. For my PC I went with optical on the media bridge because there wasn't HDMI cards out at the time and I don't want to pay what the new MSI or Sapphire's are costing. I would wait until the HDMI cards catch on and the prices go down. Your better off staying put for now.
