Question Rear camera- is this allowed??

I saw this pic in the "Show me your wheels" thread, Is this setup allowed legally? I see his camera is actually mounted on the bumper through the license plate.. very innovative. I was thinking about putting it over the plate like everyone else or maybe drill a little hole in the bumper under it.. either way the idea he has is great, but I wonder if this is actually legal.. especially in NJ.. haha. Also I have the Pioneer AVIC D2 unit with navi. Pioneer has their own version of the camera but its big and ugly. I see tons of these cameras online but I want to make sure it will have the ability to automatically switch to the camera input when I have the car in reverse. Any info. on this would be great, thanks in advance.

wow that hole in the license plate is a "pull me over" sign to the cops. in other words, no, it is not legal.

but to answer your question, there are alot of smaller cameras that are concealable. i'm getting one installed and it'll be very low key. talk to 16psibrick and he'll tell you what options you have. i'm going to have it on a pioneer D2 deck.

hope that helps.

No cop in NJ woudl pull you over for that. Maybe if you made the license plate unreadable. But nothing like that. Cops in NJ aren't dicks.

Yea, Im not sure why that would be considered illegal. Its not as though he messed up his license plate to the point where it could not be read.

Any modification to a license plate is illegal.
So if he had to cut out a hole in the license plate = illegal.

thought so. I've lived in a few states and they all have the same law I'm pretty sure. I want a low key one that works with the Pioneer D2.. so please make suggestions with your experiences in mind. I want something that will work automatically when I put the car in reverse and prefer night vision if possible, considering the Z's rear window is a joke. Thanks

Where I live and drive my Z, any mods to a license plate (especially drilling a hole in the plate ) get you an immediate citation.

hehe i have done enough rear view cams...and i have a hole in my cali plate for hte last year...

to asnwer your questions:

1. is it illegal to drille a hole into your plate? YES! its illegal to modify your plate in anyway

2. Will a cop pull yo over just for that? VERY VERY UNLIKELY, infact, i have never had that happen to me or heard anyone get that.

3. if you drive erratically, will cops use that as the primary excuse to pull you over? ABSOLUTELY.

4. if you are caught speeding, driving like a dick, or have other fix-it violations on your car, will the cop give you an additional ticket for it? YES! ABSOLUTELY.

so it comes down to the kind of driver you are i have had a cam like this for about 3 years now...never had an issue...though i dont do it this style for any of my customers, esopeically here in cali

actually, i am sorta waiting to get pulled over, so i can swap it and get my vanity plates lol

thanks man, i KNEW there had to be a way to mount the thing without compromising visibility or legality... plus its mounted to the licens plate frame so it can be removed easily... as for the wiring, my G had a grommet in the bottom of the trunk below the spare tire that goes to the outside of the car so it's easy too

Ehhhh I wouldnt go that far as to generalize a whole state such as NJ. I know from experience and im sure every single state is like this, it all depends on the town you drive through, to give you an idea. I live near Freehold in NJ about 5 minute drive away, but my house is actually 2 minutes from jackson, six flags is 3 miles away literaly anyway, in the almost 3 years ive had my accord, ive gotten 3 tickets for window tint in freehold. and 2 in jackson from 2 state troopers. I go to the six flags outlets and drive right next to jackson police and they dont care that my windows have 15% on them. Neither does manalapan which im in everyday because thats where my friends live. But if 1 cops sees me go by in freehold, its pedal to the floor to pull me over. You would think i was wanted in the state. And the last ticket i got, the cop gave me an additional ticket for my license plate frame, i guess he didnt see my radar detector, when he gave me the tickets i had it out with him, but thats beside the point. My frame looks great and doesnt block ANYTHING. Not even garden state or new jersey. NOTHING. yet the frames that the dealers give usually block the top of bottom. Its all about the town really...

Here's mine. It's the little tiny red dot above the license plate frame. $37-$42 on e-bay a couple years ago.
