Default So close to ordering an Avic-D3, but...

I've made my decision and I'm going to get this kit. I've checked sonicelectronix, circuitcity, bestbuy etc. and the best deal is on crutchfield. The only thing that concerns me is the install. I've done car installations before, but they were simple single DIN installs. I want to do the bypass on this unit and with the crutchfield offer it comes with a back-up camera. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to do the install, bypass proceedure and back-up camera? I want to do this all on my own and avoid the hefty fees the shops charge to install, please help . I'm ready to order and I'm just waiting for some feedback, thanks everybody.

I just installed one in my car not to long ago. the install is pretty easy if you have done radio installs before. Double din is the same as a single din just bigger. The only extra wires you will need to connect is the reverse light and the vechicle speed sensor wire. The bypass is even simpler. Go to avic411.com and they have a section there that explains how to do it all. I don't have the backup camera but I believe you just plug the wire from the camera to headunit.

thanks, I know the back up camera does need power supply, but I don't know where I can splice into. Well, I guess Crutchfield can help with a call.

The camera plugs right in. AND the bypass is only one wire changeout. Super easy. Gluck.

Did the install about a week ago, the power supply is just a ground and live wire so its easy you can tap it into the radio wire harness. I couldnt find the reverse wire under the kick panel so I just tapped it directly to the reverse light worked perfectly. Theres a little rubber grommet under the hood latch where you can run the wires too. Crutchfield was where I got it too, there was 15% off if you bought the d3 w/ 3 pioneer items so I ordered the bluetooth, xm/nav module and ipod control. Just takes time and try to hide as much wire in the center console it'll make it much easier to put back the unit later. And like the previous post, just go to avic411 for the bypass really easy to do and works well. Good luck and enjoy. Took couple hours but looks beautiful.

That was one of the hardest parts IMO. You'd think there was more room behind the HU, but no...

I just put a D3 in my Z with backup camera, just connect the back-up camera power supply in with the switched (accessory) wire (it's red) The bypass is super easy, just move the mute wire up one and ground it with the e-brake and radio... You'll need the factory radio mounting brackets to put in the double din kit... I can't find any so mine is kinda floating... Wish someone could help me out who has a factory radio sitting around somewhere...

Yep I second that.. I put in a D1 a year or so back. Installed the whole thing, and then couldnt fit the unit in because I left too much excess wire on the harness I put together. Had to resplice all the wires.. so make them pretty short to begin with, if at all possible.

Also be VERY careful with the grounds on this unit. If you're using an amp, be careful not to connect or disconnect the RCAs while the unit is on (or even has power? not sure) I ended up blowing a "microfuse" within the unit, and after a year of trying to diagnose, just determined the cause of it now, after TONS of frustration/research. Its also recommended to ground the actual HU's frame to the chassis as well, although some people seem to diagree with this. Aparently it says this in the install manual, but I havent checked myself yet.

Just some advise from my experience on how I screwed up =) If youre using an amp or dont understand what im talking about, let me know - good luck

I think the reserve wire is behind the pillar that is around the seat belt area. Where did you go for the reverse light? Did you take apart the rear taillights to tap that wire or is there somewhere easier to get to? I'm wondering if that would be easier to get to...

btw... reverse light wire:
