better sound, better midbass reponse...are the main advantrage of pods

kicks on the other hand, gets you better imaging, better midbass, and easier to install...but does take away your dead pedal for hte most part

I just installed one of mikes door pods today and running it off the stock stereo right now. It's night and day sound if you ask me. However, the speaker i've got sitting in it is a Focal so, there's really no comparison with that and a stock speaker! You really should get Mikes door pods, they are cheap and fit perfect.

EDIT: I re-read your post. Without the pods you will need spacers to provide enough mounting depth, some people use the stock speaker and cut out the speaker, IMO its a little ghetto (yes I did it too) and you are left with a less than desirable mounting solution for your new speakers

You will have to be mindful getting in and out of the car, they are easy to kick

oh and the other downside is screw holes in your door panel

I meant are their fitment issues with upgrading the speakers and not using a pod?

With upgraded speakers you will more than likely need spacers. Mike has 'em at Zenclosures or, as mentioned, you can cut the driver out of the stock mounts and use those. I used the stock mounts with the driver cut out for my Boston Acoustics Z6's and fitment was good, no problems. After hearing about pods and the 50% solid "grille" from the factory, I got pods from Wicked CAS.

+1 on getting out of the car with pods. My driver's side grille got knocked off by a valet and run over by the car behind when I pulled away without even noticing what had happened.

That gets real ugly, with little pieces of plastic hanging off the grille. Too many little holes to use a power tool and a tired wrist if you try to do it by hand. A few members cut out the perforated pieces leaving the grille cover frame in tact, then applying grille cloth, that turns out ok. Ill see if I can find a pic

Didnt take too long to find:

Do you NEED pods? No, but almost all aftermarket speakers will need a spacer of some kind due to extra depth of aftermarket speakers.

Pods are nice because they provide a very solid mounting surface for you mid.

The WickedCAS pods are nice, they provide a larger 'enclosure' for the mid and mold well with the door panel for a very clean customized look. They do stick out a bit so kicking them is a concern.

The Zenclosure pods are nice because they are solid material, not hollow which will help reduce resonance and they are slimmer (mount closer to door panel) so it's a little less of a concern about kicking them getting in and out of the car. I have the Zenclosures pods and love them. I think they look great and are very high quality. Also I prefer the tweeter mounted closer to the mid instead of in the sail panels.

I mounted Focal 165V Slim component speakers in the stock door position (and yes, spacers; but no pods), tweeters in the A-Pillars, driven with an Eclipse amp and Clarion H/U. The only way to describe the sound is that is just "great."
