Question 8w7 or 10w7??

How good does an 8w7 sound ? I have not heard one in person? I have had JL subs since the early 90's (currently a 12w6v2) But very interested in an 8w7 or 10w7 I am running a JL 250/1 also?? Any help would be great .P.S. I like all sorts of music rock, rap techno,classical,etc.. Thanks in advance, Mike

I have never even heard of Soundsplinter??? But anyway What amp are you running your 10w7 with?? I think the 8w7 matches up pretty well with my 250/1.... I did'nt want to buy a 10 and clip it by under powering it???? So have you heard an 8w7 in a good enclosure,If so how does it compare to other 8,10,or even 12's?? Thanks MIke

What an oxymoron, clean and w7 in the same sentence?

Soundsplinter is a well respected 'underground' or 'boutique' brand. It joins the ranks of RE, Fi, Elemental Designs, Adire.......Elemental Designs is starting to become more and more mainstream, but they got their start with an underground following.

As for the 8W7......what's your goal with your bass? The 8W7 is loud, and punchy. It does not dip as low as a good 10" and nowhere near as low as any 12" I've heard (except for maybe an old Pyle 12" from the early 90's ). In a side-by-side comparison in a listening room (not the best auditioning environment) of an 8W7 ad a 10W3, the 10W3 was definitely deeper, but the 8W7 was louder and more accurate, which is going to be a given due to the fact it's a smaller driver. Both drivers were sealed and fed I think 250 watts.

Yes, but obviously its pure opinion. Its is loud without a doubt but not what I would call clean in the least. It obviously does the job for you and as long as you are happy with your setup that is all that matters.

for the $400 that the JL cost ,300 rms

sound splinter 8"$165 it uses your jl amp 250-300 watts now and can take 500 watts if you ever upgrade amp for more power room to grow
will sound better

an Ascendant Audio Assassin Series 8" 250 rms $99 will sound better as well

and a kicker L7 8" 450 rms $115

i would buy in that order before JL 8" but , it would then be my 4th choice the JL

For what it's worth, I have three JL Audio 8W3's in my 'Z' and I am very happy with the sound. Just my $.02...

Just keep this in mind.... It's not quantity, it's quality. I have a 10w7 and 1 is all you need. But i'm going head and getting a 2nd for show purposes only....

This is exactly the intention of my repsonse above... I had three 12's in my last project and I went with three 8's in my 'Z.' I think someone thought I was trying to compare the W3's to the W7. I know they're in different leagues... I just wanted to make the point that I like the tightness and crispness of an 8" subwoofer, as compared to a 12" - but I would say a lot of it depends on your music preferences. I don't listen to a whole lot of rap, so I'm not looking for the big, heavy bass hits. I think if you compare apples to apples; meaning a JL 8" W7 and a JL 10" W7, the 10" might be better suited for the 'boom' you want when listening to rap or techno or something... And, of course, this is just my $.02. Either way, good luck with your decision...

Why are you even considering 1 8" driver? Are you trying to keep the install stealth and retain cargo space? If you are used to 12" subs, but don't/can't do a 12" in the Z, then I would not recommend a single 8".....from any manufacturer. I would step to a high end 10". My personal opinion is that you can do better than a 10w7 for the same or less money (some might argue this point). In that price range you can get a very tight, very accurate, very deep 10" (relatively speaking). The 10w7 is nice, high quality components, and it is loud, but I don't call it a SQ driver at all. You need to decide if you want the driver sealed or ported, how much room you are willing to give up, are you looking for SQ or SPL? running off 250 watts might cut down your selection a bit. Maybe look at an Image Dynmics IDQ 10" - would fit the bill nicely for a bit less of an investment than a JL 10W7: http://www.imagedynamicsstore.com/id...fer-p-114.html
