Q's about stock vs. aftermarket nav
i was just wondering if it would be better to get the stock navigation system installed on my 03' touring or an aftermarket one. Ive been thinking about the pioneer avic d-3 but have heard bad things but have also heard bad things about the stock one also. if i could get some info on this that would be great

Definitely aftermarket. If you don't want to get a whole headunit installed, you can go for a garmin or TomTom style unit. See my post w/ pics in this thread, and the link in my message:

I have the same question re: power.
I'm interested in buying a portable GPS based on how clean the install looks. However, running the power cable from the cubby all the way to the outlet behind the passenger seat is a deal breaker.
Could you even run power to a portable GPS directly from the battery?

Here is a diagram that shows a configuration for hardwiring a removable GPS.
To maintain full protection for your GPS as the manufacturer recommends, keep its power plug (and the inline fuse) intact. Purchase a female power receptacle, and insert the male power plug supplied with your GPS. Cut the wire “aft” of the GPS’s power plug, and connect this to a ACC switched power source.
If you’re brave (and some would say foolhardy), you can eliminate the GPS’s power plug from the wiring schematic. In this case you simply cut off the GPS’s power plug, and connect the wire directly to an ACC switched power line in your car. Again, a power wire to the H/U is a good choice. Going this route has a slight risk since you don’t get the voltage step-down (if in fact your transportable GPS needs this).
