Default Mounting external GPS antenna

I'm doing a little mental preparation for my soon to arrive '08 Enthusiast. I ride long distance on my motorcycle and have come to love my GPS. I'll need an external antenna for the car though.

Any suggestions on doing this without cutting, drilling, hacking and otherwise overly molesting my new set of wheels ?

Hi and welcome.

Your question has been debated, answered, and argued many times here. You should probably do a search first before starting a thread. No big deal though.

People here do various mounts (on top of the rear strut bar, inside the rear strut bar, on top of the dash, and inside the dash, on the car's roof, etc.). Your mount depends upon where you mount your GPS (easiest path to mounting the antenna from your GPS device location), esthetics vs. function, etc.

Thanks for signing-up for my350z.com. The more new members here, the better.

Do that search I mention. You'll find the answer that best fits your needs.

I tried the search but didn't really get very far. Probably should have gone right back to the beginning; I assume the debate started back with the first model.

Thanks for the tips.

^^ A search on the Audio & Video sub-forum using key words "GPS+ antenna" returns 16 pages of information.

Yes, that was part of the problem - so much stuff to wade through. But, I did go back and do it again but this time started on the last page assuming that the subject was discussed early on. It still took a lot of digging through a lot of threads. It sure gives you some appreciation for properly titled threads too.

How big is you antenna? I have mine mounted on the center of the dash. I'll post pics tomorrow.

I haven't bought one yet so pics would be perfect timing for me. Thanks.

PS, where in Northern California are you ? I do a lot of trips down your way on my motorcycle and have a good repertoire of back roads that I anxious to try out the Z on. My favorites include : Hwy 299 from Arcata to Weaverville and beyond. North from Weaverville - just about anywhere in the back roads, Hwy 36 between the coast and I-5, and of course, the Lost Coast. I love living and riding in BC but NorCal is my second home.

David M,,,welcome to my350z.com. I hope you enjoy this site as much as we all do. Congrats on your new 08 Z. Beware,,this site will become addictive. Will you be running a portable GPS device or permanent mounted device? My opinion and experience with my GPS set-up is with my antenna mounted on the top-forward of center dash piece. I found it was the easiest location to mount and I have great results. But, the reception might depend on your location. Post pics when you get your new car. What color did you get? Ok, enough babbling..LOL

I was aiming for "Ticket Me Red" but it was a bit too bright in '08 so I got the San Marino Blue ( the nice dark one ) which is similar to one of my old bikes. Interestingly enough, it's pretty close to my brother's Carrera. There's a battle brewing in the family... wouldn't you say ?
