The diameter of the hole you drilled for the T-nuts could have been too large. I've only had one T-nut ever strip out on me.

Avoiding cross threading is the same as with any other machine screw. Tighten it first with fingers, then use a ratchet afterwards....

Keep us updated on the results. It sounds like you have some tweeking to do now. The other day I couldn't figure out why my mids/highs sounded distorted. It turned out I had hit an EQ option on my HU by mistake. After I turned it off, then retuned, it sounds terrific....
Vo FTW again. For some reason, i remembered this post, looked at my headunit and the eq on my HU was on as well. Sounds better now.
