Default Best NAV/DVD PLAYER FOR Z

Alot of people like the eclipse and pioneer. Always been a fan of Alpine but they have only one model out.

How are the nav on these units? Can you upgrade the maps. When I buy, I will keep it for a long time. I also have a Alpine 9855, I want to use next to it. I will probably pub the nav in the upper compartment where the factory nav would've been.

Budget is 700 or less. 1000 maybe, if it's really nice.

do some research, then ask some better questions..

Edit...No I'm not the search police but I'm up very late because I have the biggest f'in headache you could imagine. I just got a Pioneer Avic D3, and it is amazing for the price. You can't put a double din in the upper cubby and saying which brand is better is a matter of opinion. Oh, and alpine has way more than one model out. $700 get the D3. $1000 or more, get a Z2.

I have the Pioneer Avic D3 and I love it.

Best money I've ever spent.

You might want to wait though. Pioneer is releasing a new AVIC line in June. The F series. There is even an AVIC in their Premier line as well now.

Any of the devices you mention provide excellent GPS navigation. The difference among GPS navigation devices is performance, pre-loaded POI’s, and map graphics. These days any of the current devices are nearly equal as to the address/location database.

Some points to consider:
  • DVD-based devices are slower than HDD-based devices. Flash-drive (solid-state) devices provide the best performance.
  • DVD-based devices and HDD-based devices have more pre-loaded POI’s.
  • DVD-based devices and HDD-based devices have a more elaborate/attractive map (Rand McNally-like graphics).

I would rate the devices this way:
  • Kenwood (OEM supplier is Garmin) has the best application software that provides the fastest GPS implementation (redraws, detours, etc.). The fast application software is designed for flash-drives, which gives another boost to performance.
  • Alpine’s flash drive units are about as fast and as good. The DVD-based models are slow.
  • Pioneer has the best looking graphics, but that comes with a slight performance penalty. Pioneer’s HDD-based units are fast enough, and they have a ton of pre-loaded POI’s. (Additional Note: The new AVIC-F series use a flash-based drive to provide excellent performance, but the maps on this new device are not “Rand McNally-like” and look more like Garmin’s maps.)
  • Eclipse is certainly a good unit, but it has lost ground to competing GPS devices. Eclipse’s advantage is its high quality (a very well-built device).
