Default Amp question

Hey guys,
Going with a new setup and needed some advice on my amp. Basically here is my set up.

Kenwood DDX812
KOS V500
Kenwood KOS L702
Kenwood KNA G510 Nav

Speaker wise I will be going with:
Alpine Type R 6.5 Front / Rear.

I really don’t think I will need a sub. I think I may be able to get the bass I need from the 6.5’s. Im not into really hard hitting music.

My question is this. What size amp should I get for these 4 speakers and I were to get a sub should I get a separate amp to power it. I think maybe if I did get a sub all I would need was a 8”.

The specs on the 6.5’s are below:
• Power Specification
• Peak Power: 300W
• RMS Power: 100W
• Frequency Response: 65Hz - 27kHz
• Sensitivity: 87dB, 1W/1m
• Installation Diameter: 136mm
• Depth: 59mm

Just curious. How come you didn't just get the DNX8120 that has built-in nav? Did you already have the nav unit?

How is that 812 treating you? Where did you get it? I have been researching and the 8120 goes for $1200 the cheapest i saw, while the 812 goes for $700 and the nave unit can be bought for $220.

Alpine 6.5's will give you very little (if any) bass at all. I would add a small 8" sub to complete everything.

Otherwise, nice equipment choices. Kenwood is top notch.

I was thinking the same thing...One thing i have now is the fact that i have to figure out how to do the navi in the 07 cubby. I understand that the cubby is too small for the 7" screen and the 07's arent compatible with the famous 03 cubby...ill have to either fab it myself or buy one to customize by a professional..im sure its doable, but how much do i want to spend..haha

Maybe i should go with the 8120 all in one...though i really wanted to do the seperate monitors..

3kgtslflip - if you could please let me know how you like it.

You can take a look at JL G series which are also relatively small and can fit anywhere!!

I would like to address this question (and, not wanting to “jack” ncparamedic’s Thread… I’m sure he will allow this slight diversion… in fact, he already answered this question).

A good reason to buy a separate navigation box is simply because this industry (GPS devices) is evolving rapidly. If you go with an all-in-one device, you are stuck with its internal navigation component. When a better navigation solution becomes available (and the industry is evolving rapidly), you cannot easily update the navigation part of your CES if you go with an all-in-one device.

An actual example: I installed the Garmin GVN 52 “black box” in my car, and connected this to a 7” LCD in the upper/forward cubby (I could have easily connected this to double-din LCD H/U), and wired the audio to my car’s H/U so that I could play voice navigation through the car’s speakers. Now the Garmin GVN 52 is replaced by the Garmin GVN 53 (which has new support for RGB monitors and provides better performance). If I want the better unit, it’s as simple as swapping out the GVN52 for the GVN53 updated model. I have my Garmin GVN 52 unit mounted in the small rear/upper cubby behind the driver’s seat (That way it is easily accessible for application and map updates using the device’s SD slot). The swap is as easy as unplugging the device’s harness, pulling the GVN52 (it’s small and held in place with Velcro strips), and replacing this with the Garmin GVN53 (and plugging it into the existing harness). I do not need to “rewire” anything.

The same scenario applies to the Kenwood KNA-G510 Navigation Box. This unit is equivalent to the Garmin GVN 53 with the additional feature of touch screen function (the Garmin unit uses a handheld RF remote control and does not support touch screen function while the Kenwood navigation device supports touch screen function with compatible Kenwood LCD touch screens). Installing a separate navigation box (i.e., the Kenwood KNA-G510) provides the ability to simply swap out the navigation component when a better unit becomes available.

But, back to the original question which is what external amp to install with the named speakers.

Since these speakers are high-intermediate, it’s best to team them with an intermediate external amp. I really don’t think you need to spend a lot on the amp to drive these speakers since you won’t hear the better amp’s features with these speakers.

If you do decide to go with a SubW, I would get a separate amp to drive this.

Thanks spike!!! You just made my purchase more justifiable! Now i don't feel so bad that I didn't spend the extra cash for the dnx8120 instead.
