I need someone with more knowledge of IPODs than I have to help answer a question. I have installed a DNX-8120 and previously ran a 5th generation IPOD off the DNX-8120 head unit and it everything worked perfectly. Now I went out and bought a brand new IPOD classic 80 GB version and it will not interface with the head unit at all. The IPOD is playing and I can hear music when I select the function on the head unit, but the unit never recognizes the IPOD. Does anyone have any information that might clear this up for me?
********Long story short, 3' extension cable prevents IPOD signal from syncing up with DNX-8120. I removed extension cable and now have only KCA-iP300V in-line with DNX-8120 cables and IPOD classic works. Crutchfield gets a thumbs up for their tech support. Kenwood gets a big fat 0. I wanted to make sure the correct information is disseminated in this forum. Sorry if I confused anyone.********

When I bought the head unit it had a big sticker on the outside of the box that stated that the unit had been updated. I went to the Kenwood support page for IPOD compatibility and didn't see any updates available for the DNX-8120. I am not really sure where I would find version number for the IPOD software installed in the DNX-8120 head unit.

try doing a hard restart of your iPod
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320.
If that doesn't work make sure that your iPod is connected to the correct USB cable (the one with the iPod label on it), check to see if you have a proper ground for the HU. let me know if that doesn't work (former OWC/apple sales)

Like I stated above, I had a 5th generation IPOD connected to the HU and it worked great. I never disconnected the adapter cable, so I don't see how it could be connected to the wrong USB, but I tried both when it didn't recognize the IPOD anyway. Ditto on the ground for the unit. I did read in another forum that this generation IPOD included encryption in the cable included with the IPOD, is this true? I was going to home tonight and try to connect the IPOD to the HU with the cable included and see what that does. IPOD software version is 1.1.2 PC

there is no encryption or anything like that. I also have a iPod classic (160), and the same HU. I can connect my iPod to any HU, radio with a dock, xbox, etc without problems. Make sure you are up to date with your iPod software, if anything try doing an iPod restore. Let me know how that goes.

First I want to thank you for your help, it’s much appreciated. I borrowed a friends’ 5th generation IPOD and it didn’t work either. In a gamble I plugged in the cord that came with my IPOD to the USB connection on the HU and low and behold the deck immediately recognized the IPOD classic. I believe now that I have a bad KCA-IP300V cable and have called the company to replace it. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Well the latest update is not encouraging to any new IPOD owners. I called Kenwood support this afternoon after the new Kenwood KCA-iP300V cable that I received as a replacement for the original did not work with my IPOD classic. Kenwood has informed me that in fact Apple has added a verification routine in to the “NEW” IPODS’ that is causing Kenwood cables not to work with these IPODS. Kenwood has also informed me they have received an ever-increasing number of complaints and presently have no work around for these changes. So as of right now I am out of luck.

Kenwood said it is only effecting the latest IPODS. Explain this, my original apple USB cable works fine with the deck, just no sound or video of course, two Kenwood cables can't interface with deck, but output sound, no video. I am going to guess the IPOD classic you know works was manufactured earlier the hardware cycle, mine is brand new. Better yet call Kenwood yourself and while your at it post a complaint to Apple. If Microsoft did this it would hammered to no end.

I have a DNX-7120 basically the same as 8120. I'm using a iPod Touch (with latest 2.0 software) via Kenwood KCA-iP300V cable. With the 2.0 update I can NOW play VIDEO. The previous Ipod Touch software gave me AUDIO only. Whatever Apple did in there current update made an improvement with the Kenwood unit.
Not sure why Kenwood said there having problems with the 'New' Ipods. The Ipod Touch is fairly new and the Kenwood cable works just fine.
I don't believe its a Kenwood issue, more like Apple or maybe both?

Are you guys still having problem with the new ipod?
I have recently purchased the 8120 and was able to hook up my iphone to it. it can play the playlist and shows the music video.
Although, when i connect the iphone to the cable(Kenwood KCA-iP300V), the iphone shows a message that the connector is incompatible and the phone does get a lil warm after connecting to it.
I have ordered the new 16G Nano and was wondering if you guys have experience with it now that it's one year later!
thanks!

sorry for the confusion...
I can hear the music from the speakers. I can also hear incoming calls thru the speakers. But when i am talking using the 8120 mic, the receiving party has a hard time hearing me clearly...
