Default backup camera for dnx7100/7120

i'm thinking about getting a backup camera to hookup to my dnx7120 when i install everything. my question is, when you put the car in reverse does the headunit need to be powered on to get the rear view picture on the screen? i'm asking this because i am aware that the dnx7100 takes some time to power on and boot up. if that is the case with the 7120, then its not worth putting in a camera in my opinion. everytime i'd want to look at the rear view camera, then i'd have to start the car, wait for the headunit to power up then put it in reverse. not really worth the wait or hassle.

anyone know?

If it is booting up and you put it in reverse it will switch to the back camera image, even if it is still booting up.

so i finally got around to hooking up a camera to my dnx7120 (can't believe it took ~20 months). needless to say, when i move the gear to reverse and the unit is booting up, the backup camera does not display. the headunit continues to show the bootup screen. i do have the backup camera interrupt on, so when i shift to reverse (and the unit is already booted up and playing one of the source), the backup camera is showing. i'll look again though the menus and the manual, but i'd say this is normal and i'm not too keen on it. anyone know if this is definitely the case?

You don't have it set up properly. Mine comes on after a few seconds.

What camera are you using, maybe the delay is in the camera circuitry.

BTW - here's my install thread...

One more thing that might help, when you park the car, you should leave it in reverse.

hi Dave. i'm using this Boyo VTL 120 http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...0+-BLACK-.html

i looked through the menu and i don't see any other configuration that would help with this. like i said, i have the reverse camera interrupt set to ON. i do not believe there is any delay in the camera because when the unit is fully booted, the rear camera video is displayed almost instantly after putting it in reverse gear. the only thing i can think of is i do have a custom picture for bootup. i'm going to change that back to the default kenwood bootup screen and see what happens. :/

I just went and timed mine - from ignition on to picture showing takes 5 seconds. How does that compare to yours?

In those 5 seconds, I'm hooking up seat belt, getting my work badge out the console, etc. By the time I'm ready to let out the clutch and go it's already on.

thanks for checking.

i do not get the rear cam video until after the unit fully boots (which is longer than 5 seconds). i see the bootup screen and the progress bar at the bottom and after the progress bar completes, then i'll see the rear cam. is that what you see? maybe yours just boots up faster than mine..

The progress bar appears for a second or so then the RV image pops up.

I vaguely remember having something similar happen when I first installed it. I don't recall what setting I had to change, I believe it was as setting to give the RV priority over everything else. I'll have to check and see if I can find it.

I also suspect it may be related to how long after the camera sees power before it sends a video signal. The HU may not switch to the camera feed until it sees a good video signal.

figured it out. this happens because the Ipod is the selected source. if i have the tuner or something else selected, when the unit starts up, the rear camera displays after about 5 seconds (like Dave mentions). obviously the bootup is different than normal. this sorta sucks because i use the Ipod 90% of the time in my car and for it to work like this, i would need to know to switch to a different source before shutting down. oh well..

I was driving around a little while ago and thought to ask you about having the iPod connected. I tried mine for a while and gave it up for USB sourced music. The iPod connection seemed to cause all kinds of strange behavior - being slow was one of them.

I suspect if you switch to another source, your problem would go away. Mine is always set to either USB or SAT. You might consider a USB for your iTunes based music. I have several USB thumb drives, from 2 to 8 Gb. I use a free utility named iTunes Agent, it allows you to sync iTunes playlists to external non-iPod devices, like a thumb drive. Whenever I get a bunch of new music on iTunes for my iPhone, I hook up the jump drive and resync it from a special playlist I maintain.

i'm using a 2nd gen nano and that hasn't given me any problems except for the typical ipod reset like once every month or two. i've had constant problems with my iphone but the nano works fine. i did use a usb drive before but i did not like how it performed. it was quirky in that everytime i started up the deck, it would not resume and would start playback from the beginning with the first song on the drive. also the fast forwarding within a track was much slower than with an ipod. i use this often as i listen to live sets alot that are usually over an hour long. thanks for your insight though.

The 7100 doesn't behave the same with USB as you describe. Sadly, it doesn't have fast foward or rewind, something I really would like for it to do.

"live sets over a hour" Jam band fan?
