Is new HU needed for DVD sound?
I've read several posts on this forum and have gotten the impression that you won't be able to hear DVDs playing if you don't replace the stock HU. Is there any way around this? I was hoping to get an inexpensive Alpine TME-M760 off e-bay and a cheap NAV system to install in my Z. I wanted to put a NAV in one mailbox slot and maybe a DVD in the other(unless the NAV system I buy also plays DVDs). Also, are ther any inexpensive NAV systems out there. I already know I can probably find an inexpensive LCD and DVD player. I am primarily just interested in having a working screen in the cubby with the DVD sound playing through my stereo. I want NAV capablity too but can be basic.
i think you mean distortion. anyway, the fm modulator i got plugs right into your HU and it disables the car antenna when it is powered up. i use it made by audiovox, and i get no interference what so ever. sounds really good on dvds or games. i did get some interference at first, but it was caused by my rca cables. i fixed that. hopefully this helps. you can either use one of these or buy a new HU.
OR try using audio input thru the tape deck...using the tape converter, usually seen with Cd players....Ive heard its better than the Fm mod. but it depends on how much looks matter to you. im sure theres a way to stealth wire the whole thing...

^ no way, those cassette tape adapter sound waaaay worse then a fm modulator! Get a decent fm modulator (not an ebay one) and keep the output at about 45% going to the modulator and it should sound fine. I use one for my xbox and it sounds great.
Something else to consider that I found is that they now have Wireless FM modulators for cars. Obviously the huge advantage is portability, and comes in handy for with MP3 players(ipods), PDA, etc. Not sure of the quality, but another option that would reduce wiring, etc.
