Arrow My Kenwood DNX8120 is pissing me off - Please Help

I've been trying to connect my portable hard drive, but for some reason it does not recognize it. The USB gives it power, but the screen tells me there is no device connected. I tried everything I could find in the sh!tty manual instructions and nothing works. I have a Toshiba 320GB portable hard drive.

Also, if I'm using my navigation and listening to music at the same time, the nav voice is extremely loud. It doesn't matter how low I'm playing my music, it just screams out the directions and I can't figure out how to lower the volume.

Has anyone else had these problem with their Kenwood?

Also, make sure that you are not connecting a power on only usb into the unit. On some portable hard drives there are two usb ends, and only one actually transfers data.

Well, I erased everything I had in it and then put one of every file format (jpg, jpeg, gif, mp3, wma, avi, etc.) just to make sure the files weren't the issue.

There's only one USB port on the hard drive.

^ There should be only one usb port on the drive.

What Im talking about is the cable. The cable should have (In most cases) 3 USB ends. One that goes into the hard drive. One that just powers the unit (I never use this one). And one that uses data transfer. Ill upload a pic if I can find one.

And I think Spike wanted to know how your drive is formatted, not what formats of files your using. As in Fat32, NTFS?

I could be wrong here but I thought I read somewhere on some head units that they cant process portable hard drives like over 30GB because its too much to handle. I would love to know the answer to the OPs question as well.

The hard drive has to be formatted in FAT32, and not NTFS.

If you connect the hard drive to a computer, go to "My Computer" and right click on the icon. The "format" option should be there.

Here is more likely your problem. First of all the Kenwood units will only read up to a 80GB portable hard drive, second it will only supply 500ma of current. If your hard drive consumes more than this it will not work.

Best to use a thumb drive then. Im sure that you can get one on newegg.com for about 10.00 or so depending on the size you need.

I guess you're right. I found an old thumb drive of mine, plugged it in, and it worked perfectly. Thanks!

Go into A/V in settings and there should be an option to change nav volume. Also, in the actual navigatioin menu, there should be a setting somewhere to change it to speed sensitive volume, never tried it. I have my volume set to 32. Also, you are connecting your usb drive to usb and not into ipod right?
