As far as I'm concerned, the best alarm on the market for quality, reliability, ease of use and install, features and price.
More important than the alarm? The installer. make sure you go local small shop with a good rep to install for you. To them you are their bread and butter...not just another customer. Your car is you baby - pay the price to get it done right!

I've always been fond of the Viper line, but you can't go wrong with any name brand alarm system (stay away from cheap Ebay alarms).
I would recomend going with a big box store - they pay their installers by the hour so your install won't be "just another commission", they stand behind their products/installs nationwide and they will be fully insured if something were to go wrong.
That being said, regardless of where you go ask to talk to the person who will actually be doing the install and ask some basic questions. Also, tell them you want to inspect everything before the vehicle is put back together. If the installer can't answer basic questions or won't let you inspect the install go somewhere else. If he asks you why you want to see the install tell him because you are expecting an OEM appearance!

Oh, and my local Best Buy has 4 'installers'. They get paid $9 an hour and they are all straight out of high school. We repair their work A LOT as they use butt connectors and T-taps for every single install they do. So yeah, Big Box? Nah...I'll stick to a shop with proper experience thanks.
When I used to work at Circuit City (a few years back) we were always busy in the months after Xmas repairing the local small shop installs.
Apparantly because the installers worked on commission and they didn't get paid for repairs they wouldn't fix anything until March or so. So those people came to us and paid us to reinstall the entire system (we soldered everything).
There will always be arguements between big / small shop installers - my point was to talk to the installer and make sure you are comfortable with them touching your cars. I won't lie, I've seen some really nasty things come out of big box stores, but at the same time I've seen the same crap come from the small shops.
Our local Best Buys solder ignition wires but still use butt connectors for smaller wires (something I can't stand).

But yeah, I apologize for lumping ALL big box stores into the poop category. I personally know 4 guys from 4 different Futureshops (owned by Best Buy) that are very good installers. Its just a crap shoot to the uneducated buyer as to whom is good and who is not. I can also name you some local shops are absolutely horrid when it comes to installing. Luckily those guys don't generally last too long in the business.
Yeah, most people don't realize "where" you have your car worked on doesn't really matter - the important thing is "who" touches your car.
I don't like T-taps for 20awg wire, let alone ignition / acc / starter / connections. Thats just crazy.
