Best Components for $300
I no these types of threads are made everyday but I figured one more couldn't hurt :/ Until recently I was planning on purchasing a set of HSK165s for $300 from an install place but that has fallen through seeing that I will be getting my system installed elsewhere. What would be comparable w/ HSK165 with hopefully a better tweeter (only complaint I've heard about HSK165). I heard some Polk MM6501 which sounded pretty good for $199. I really do not want to go over $300 though if possible. Will mostly likely be run off a JL 300/2v2 (150w rms x 2 or P400-4 (200w rms x 2)
Thanks for any input,
Sean

Define best.
The "best" way to buy speakers or find a wife is to do it yourself with an audition. What sounds best to your ears, with your music might not sound best to me with mine. Inside of a car there is only so much a speaker and do to overcome the coloration induced by the interior's odd shape, tiny interior, and small volume that it's impossible to get a "good" sound IMHO. "Good enough" yes, but even a fair pair of home audio speakers in a fair room are going to sound as good as a very expensive set of car speakers.
Nobody (in their right mind) would attempt to put a fine home theater system inside a tiny bathroom but that's pretty much what we're trying to do - we sit off to one side, sit in a room with massive amounts of reflections, and a room that's way too tiny. When I did an acoustic analysis of my Z I found three odd peaks in the response that I had a real trouble getting rid of and looking at them they turned out to be the resonate frequency of the height, width, and length of the cabin.
What I did was to make a nice audio CD (NOT MP3) of my music and spent some time auditioning speakers at local retailers. You really have to listen to the speakers side-by-side and the ear has a terrible memory.
Good luck.

Heres the problem with this question.. People can name good quality components, but they cant say you will like them... I personally like the rainbow SLC 265.25, some wont... Most can only recommend what they have heard, some will try to recommend what they heard was good but have never actually heard them..
I am not a fan of CDTs, though I have only heard the speakers that are $200 or less... Others have same the Alpine Type X PRO components are good, and they should fit easily in the doors. Then theres Morel Tempo 6, DLS, etc etc....
GL, best bet is go listen to them, but even then that doesnt work... Because they are in a floor model, and thats not the same as being in your car....
Edit: Person above me made a better post than me about similar ideas

Majority of places around me that sell speakers don't sell exactly what I'm looking for so I haven't heard a lot that have impressed me at all in person except for the Polk MM6501.
type x seem good, I remember looking at them awhile ago but for some reason at that time they were out of my price range, so much for that now. They run between $280-$330ish it looks like. I like to try to get a lot of feedback because which ever set I get, I will most likely be getting without ever hearing in person :/

I bought the EF-61FG w/ TW25 upgrade which for $170 shipped is a steal (also on woofersetc). They got delivered today, but I'm ~250 miles from home so it will be Thursday before I get to look at them and make any comments at all.

The Momo's as far as I know are the older version of the 6501's (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and thats a steal on them.
I realized I didn't answer your CDT question.
You have the order correct as far as I understand it, and as far as I can tell the EF is just a "euroframe" version of the CL series speakers. I don't know the differences really, but given the cost and the reviews I'd found online (and the fact that our cars suck for audio setups anyway and I was tired of researching) I think they are a good option.
The Momo's I found at that price after I'd already bought the CDT's, so I would debate between those 2 sets if I was still looking.
Mind you, I've never heard any of these and won't hear mine for at least 3 weeks.

and if you spend $500 on speakers, spend tons on sound deadening material and/or door pods or kick panels.
With enough sound deadening and cutting out the factory speaker grill you can make the doors a decent spot for speakers, but if I spent $500 on speakers, I would want more than decent.....

I won't be spending that much. I'm leaning towards the Alpine Type X SPX-17PRO but haven't heard/read a lot about them so who knows. Anyone here have any experience with them?

The Polk Momo's are great speakers. The newest versions are nice and shallow (Neodimium magnets yo!) and very easy to install in the Z. The tweeters are pretty warm and the crossovers do them justice. Big magnets are going to be a problem for installing into the Z - even with big spacers.

What about these (added to your list) as well.
I often saw 2 out of these 3 options as the "debate" for people. The responses were usually mixed which meant to me they were all the same, being cheap I went with the CDT's.
Again, The Momo's would get my money given the $140 price. I'd rather fight to get them fit (1" spacers in my room and I don't mind having to do some minor tweaking) than spend a lot of extra money to get the newer versions (assuming I get them fit fine in the end).
