Default 10w6 airspace ? please help

For the past 2 years Ive been using Mikes zenclosure under the strut bar which has 1.4 cuft of air space and 2 10w6. For those 2 years experienced audio guys have been telling me the airspace is way to small. The other day an installer actually showed me small hair line cracks its causing in the cones. Jl site is kind of un clear on the air space but most sites say .5 - 1.0 but Mikes box still falls under those specs.. I was gonna upgrade to his rear trunk bow but its 2.2 cuft. which might be too much. Please help

I'm not too sure how the JL site is unclear on volume. Their recommended sealed enclosure is 0.625 cu. ft. ( http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_s...hp?series_id=6 ) per sub. So Mike's 1.4 cu. ft. is almost perfect after displacement (0.068 cu. ft. per sub). I say leave them in the 1.4 cu ft. enclosure, but reinforce the inside of the joints and corners with some fiberglass. 2-3 layers of chopped mat should be good.

If the cones are failing that's a failing of the cones not the wooden box. The amount of audio energy to break 3/4" thick wood would also split your head wide open so good luck with that! Putting in a bit of material is a good way to tune the box as StreetOC above suggested.

Too large or too small of a box are both going to cause problems with the sound or the speaker's suspension. Speakers are designed for a very specific sized box using the Thiel-Small parameters and a pretty simple formula. When a manufacture gives you a range of 0.5 to 1.0 cu.ft. of enclosure understand that the sound is going to have a vastly different quality all across that range of sizes. A mere 0.1 cu.ft. is going to have a noticeable impact - if you care. Lots of people are going for amplitude rather than quality.

If the box is too big the air spring behind the speaker assembly is going to be too loose allowing the speaker cone to over extend in each direction stressing the surround and the spider materials.

i dont usually pick apart peoples statements... but

how do you explain the success of the many infinite baffle applications

also the recommended air space for my 10w7 is around 1.4 cu.ft.... i made that box taking into account displacement and it sounded like A$$... then i grew some ***** and made a box just a hair over 2 cu.ft. , stuffed it with poly fill and it sounds infinitely better with much better response now....
