An upgrade to the OEM system has been known since day-1. There are several ways to go about it.

1) Install an amp and aftermarket sub in an enclosure in the hatch area. Many different enclosure designs are pre-made and ready for you to order.

2) Purchase and install a pre-made fiberglass enclosure that fits into the OEM sub location along with an aftermarket sub and amp.

3) I've heard success stories of owners installing an Infinity Basslink in the factory sub location.

4) You could attempt a DIY of a drop in replacement of the Bose sub, but there haven't been many satisfied owners once they were finished.

5) Some have contemplated replacing the rear speakers with 6.5" subs.

6) Come up with an idea all your own and post lots of pictures here for us to see.

Tons of info in the Audio forum here.

Someone did a long time ago (see my option #2 above). It's a custom fiberglass enclosure for a single 10" down firing sub that fits in the bose sub location and/or glovebox. The maker is Wicked CAS....

X1000 not even worth upgrading the sub.
The bose system has that feature that when you turn up the volume the bass will start fading out weather it be hooked up to a amp or a bass link from infinity. You need something like a MTX Re-Q in order to install it, you will need to run speaker wires from the sub output from the factory amp.
It is not even worth upgrading your amp if you dont upgrade your head unit and all.
