Ok, i searched around a little and couldnt find the answers i needed. Im a complete noob on audio so hopefully some of u will help me out

The stock stereo has gotta go. I have an 03 non-bose system w/ navigation and its awful. Im not crazy on audio just would like a nice upgrade and need to keep everything under $1000. I plan on buying a 10inch JL W3 or W6 sub, amp, front speakers and double-din DVD headunit. I would like recommendations on speakers for the front($200-350).

Will I need an additional amp to power just the speakers? I was thinking about about getting a multi channel amp to power both the sub and speakers. Not sure if that'll work or not.

Also wanted to know what exactly the ohms meant. I see they sell the JL W3 in 4 ohm and 8 ohms.

Any info on this will def be appreciated!

I think this will answer some of your questions regarding resistance. And yes they do sell multi channel amps for that purpose, just make sure you have ample RMS wattage to power your entire system.

 

if you get a new radio you wont need to put a amp to your door speakers its already a amp in itself.... i have all mtx.... and kicker amp... i have a kicker 1000.1 and mtx 9500 10" and its louder than anyones cars or trucks around here... mtx makes great door speakers also.. i have jvc head unit..

I would go with Boston Acoustics for the front speakers. Technically if you are going to get a new head unit and are on a budget you do not need an amp for your front or rears. Look on Crutchfield in there outlet section.

i was thinking these for the front speakers. Do you they are worth it or should i just get something else for around $150?. And I decided i'm prolly just going to go with a 10in. JL W3.

you should go with elemental design. Right now their nine.1 amplifier is 50%. Great stuff, I got 2 10inch elemental subs and the amp on the way.

 

you can't go wrong with focals, people love them there. Other brands to check out are infiniti's, elemental design, boston acoustics.

 

The ohm rating of the subs is a very important parameter and you must order the correct impedance (ohms) to get the most out of your system.

However, you can't select the correct impedance until you have selected the amp you are going to use. Once the amp is selected you need to know the lowest impedence that the amp will play at (like 1 or 2 ohm stable). Then, you have to determine how many subs you want to go with (like 1 or 2 or more). Once you know the amp and the number of subs you want, you can order the correct subs to achieve the lowest ohm rating that the amp will drive. You can wire subs in different ways to achieve different impedences (for parallel wiring, assuming all subs are the same impedence, you can just divide the common impedence by the number of subs - (2) 8 ohm subs would be 8/2 = 4 ohms and (2) 4 ohm sub would be 4/2 = 2 ohms; If you wire the subs in series you add the individual impedences (2) 8 ohm subs would be 8+8=16 ohms and (2) 4 ohm subs would be 4+4= 8 ohms).

If you are looking to go with one sub and your amp is 2 ohm stable it would be beneficial to get a dual voice coil 4 ohm sub to achieve the 2 ohm load by wiring both coils in parallel.

If you don't understand all this, don't worry, it's a lot to take in. Just make sure you know exactly what are you going after before you purchase the subs to make sure you get the correct ones!

 

just put in the alpine w203 head unit, and you dont need another amp if you run aftermarket speakers, because it comes with a powerful amp.

 

^^ yea.. i was actually thinkin goin all alpine. A friend of mine had a type r sub in his audi and it sounded great.. Anyone know how theyre speakers are?

And is it worth getting component speakers for the front?

Im about to buy the alpine type r dual coil 4 ohm sub and alpine m500amp and alpine w203 HU. Can anyone recommend a good amp kit to use for that set up??

 

and Ive searched for DIYs and havnt been able to find anything on how to install all of this. If anyone can direct me to a thread on showing how to change everything yourself I would appreciate it.

 

i have factory nav.. i need help on how to remove the front dash and everything else. most of the links on this forum dont evne work on the audio diys.. ??? whos the audio mod on this forum.

 

Are you sure you have factory navigation with non-Bose?
