Alternator noise is a whirring sound - ticking isn't from an alternator. This could be a rare case of fuel pump noise. I certainly know where the gas tank is, just under the subwoofer cavity where many of us mount our amplifiers ... so I'm assuming there's a pump under there. What is the frequency of the "ticking"? If it was a bad spark plug wire I would say it was a "popping" sound.

^^ Paul, He’s not describing this as a ticking noise. “At tickover” is a term used in Europe (meaning the car’s engine running at idle).
He's telling us the noise is apparent at idle, and becomes worse as engine speed increases.

sounds like u have a grounding issue with the rca's or headunit. just throwing it out there but try grounding all the outter portions of the rca's together and u might notice ur problem is gone.

Final Update
Gents,
I finally sorted this by going back to 1 x RCA cable and decommisioning the other one
I took the single RCA out of the High Pass on the active crossover and then put on 2 x RCA doublers/splitters. This is not ideal as I have no real time control over front rear fade, but I have balanced to a suitable level on the amp and this works.
It is a shame but this is the solution as grounding, re-routing etc. did not work.
Thanks all.
