Ok, I wired mine as per the diagram and it doesn't work?!

I put the cord that comes with the detecor back and it works.

Rear view mirror still works.

Do I actually have to solder them for it to work? I was trying to test it before I did the soldering.

Any ideas anyone?

Be certain you are using the center two conductors on the RJ11 connector. Check polarity. It's easy to get it backwards.
It WILL work.

For some reason, the 3rd pin on mine was the ground and the 4th pin was the 12v on the RJ-11 wire. I triple checked and even had my wife look at the diagram on this thread to make sure I wasn't getting it wrong. As soon as I switched the two wires around it worked fine.

Thanks!!

Got the bracket for the V1 on Monday and installed it Monday night. Looks great. Mike turned it around in record time too. I think I sent him the money on Friday sooo........Thanks Mike!

I had purchased one of the V1 brackets made for the vette (zip car) but this is both better and easier IMO.

one thing is bothering me though... it looks like that the radar is facing the same way as the rear view mirror does, which is probably towards your head. also means that you're not detectecting radars coming from behind.

Default V1 Mount

Here are a few pics of Mikes Z bracket with the V1 mounted. Sorry for the lousy pics but the car was in the garage again (due to more snow) and a bit dirty.

It doesn't face the same way the mirror is facing. I have mine straight back and forward and my mirror is angled toward me.

No problems

The rear view mirror has double pivots. So the mirror can be angled at the base as well as at the top of the post. Believe me the radar is not facing the same direction as the mirror. It is facing straight ahead down the road.

I'd also like to thank Mike. I received my mirror mount within 5 days. Now, I have to order my Passport 8500. The only problem is that I noticed on Escort's website that they are releasing a new version (Passport 8500 X50) at the end of April. I hope that I can wait that long. Maybe I'll just order the Valentine One (and Mike's bracket) instead!

Default Passport 8500 Wiring

I've been asked for more "detailed" information on doing this wiring from several members, so here is a little more detail that will hopefully help someone out when wiring their radar detector to the mirror wiring:

1. Don't take your mirror apart, just unplug the connector from the back of the mirror.

2. Their is a little black plastic cover that is easily removed that hides the wires from the headliner to the mirror bracket. The wires you need are under that cover. Remove the cover.

3. Slide the thin plastic tubing back that shrouds the three wires that were previosly covered by the black plastic cover.

4. Now you should have access to the wires. One is black (ground), one is black with red tracer, one is black with orange tracer. You need black and black with red tracer for this job.

5. I didn't cut the wires, just skinned the insulation off of the black and black with red tracer so I had a section about 3/16" with no insulation on it.

6. Look at the RJ11 connector diagram I posted. I can't tell you what colors your phone connector will have, and they will be reversed from end to end. Cut the cable the length you need.
The center two conductors are the ones needed for power & ground. Strip the ends of these conductors.

7. Looking at the drawing I posted, determine which color in the phone connector is ground, and which one is power. Carefully wrap the stripped end of the phone wire around the skinned places in the mirror wiring.

8. Be careful that they don't touch, plug in your Passport, and turn on the ignition. It should power the passport. IF not, switch the two wires. It won't hurt the Passport if they are backwards for testing.

9. When you are satisfied that it is wired correctly, solder the connection. I used a small pencil soldering iron. Wrap a small piece of electrical tape over each connection.

10. Pull the plastic tubing back down over the wires, plug mirror connector back in, replace plastic cover (pull sections apart for tight fit). You're done.

Why don't you guys paint it all in black? It's not belongs as it is. There is big choise of paints in Home Depot at $3 a can, and some of them can do a finish like on the back of the mirror.

The mount is a flat blackish nylon. The flash from the camera makes it look light gray.
