This is one awesome product. Easy to order too! I PMed Mike, PayPaled him $20, and a couple of days later the mount shows up in the mail. Fits like a charm! I recommend this 100%

Thanks Mike!

Same here. Got it last week from Mike. Hardwiring was a b!tch, but mounting was perfect!

I've had the mount for at least a month now and it works great. Only problem is now that I have my subs installed, the radar detector is finding a way to jump off the bracket (not to mention make a lot of noise). Any ideas?

Bend the male end of the original suction cup bracket so it is a tighter fit in the detector slot. That will stop the detector from moving.

Does anyone either know or can help with the splicing that needs to happen? I had planned to tackle this project myself until I started stripping the RJ11 wires. The gauge is much too small for me to be comfortable stripping much less soldering.

I went to three different audio shops and they're scared - two won't go near the job and one won't do it for anything less than $150. It's quite possible I'm not going to the right places, but I'm kinda new to the area and don't know the shops reputations.

Any recommendations would be very appreciated.

That's crazy! Listen, if I can do it, I think most people can do it (of course there are exceptions...lol)

Anyway, when I first tried to strip the regular telephone cord to get my patch cord to hard wire it, the one I selected was CRAPPY. I couldn't strip the wires to save my life. Then I tried a couple more other ones (different ones that I fould lying around) and I found one that was better quality and much easier to strip. Try using a tool that you can buy or borrow from a friend to strip a network patch cable. If you don't get all the wires then, CAREFULLY try to strip the middle two wires with a pocket knife or razor. Make sure you start with enough phone cord in case you screw up to try again. If it's a bit too long who cares right?

Once you get your home made hardwiring telephone cord, then you have to strip two wires on your rear view mirrror (assuming you have the homelink mirror). Otherwize, I can't help you as I don't know how to do the other hardwire to the fuse box. You must strip the black and orange wire and the black and red wire. My best recommendation here is to practice on regular speaker wire with a HIGH QUALITY wire stripper. And I mean practice till you have it down pat. You don't want to actully cut the wire, you just want to cut through the insulation and spread it out so that the wire is exposed enough to wrap your wires from the cord you made.

You need to use the center two wired from your phone cord and they go to the two wires you stripped. Try one way and then the other, I'm not sure which one goes to which, but just twist them on, turn the detector on and then turn your iginition all the way to the setting before the car starts. If it doesn't work then try the wires the other way around.

Once you got it, then you can either wrap them really tight and put electrical tape or you can solder it (I really sucked at this and managed to burn my headliner....) and then put electrical tape over it.

Good luck!!

Hello All, Found this thread awhile ago and PM'd Mike. He sent the mount right out and I just installed today for my 8500. Turned out very nice on my Roadster. I really like the small Z emblem on the mount. Nice touch.

BTW, Like others I was having a hard time stipping the small wires on the RJ11 phone cord to solder to the mirror wires. Until I just used a simple lighter and burned off the casing. Worked like a charm. Then I was able to solder to the Z mirror wires. Here's a pic of the install:

Thanks for the link maximadave, but I finally broke down and did it myself over the weekend. I finally got a couple of good strips, and the soldering job isn't the best, but it's all taped up and hidden under the sheath so it looks very clean.

The only problem was that the front end bounced a little on bumpy roads or over 60MPH. I went to my hardware store and simply purchased a black rubber foot that I installed between the Passport and rear-view. Very solid, very professional.

Thanks to all for motivating me to do it myself.

how about some pics. I'd like to see the black rubber foot you installed. I just pulled the power wire tight so the detector doesn't vibrate under rough roads.

Ok, I've been trying this install all day and the damn wires inside the 3 different phone cords I've found around the house have all been so thin that they are extremely difficult to strip. Even after I do that I try hooking them up both ways to my mirror and the Passport 8500 won't even light up for a second. I don't think the tiny single wire is enough to power it. Where are you guys finding the hard wire kits for 10 bucks? I have only found them for $30 plus shipping. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Oh, and I tried phone wires with only 2 wires inside of them and one with the 4 wires in them and used the middle two in both of them and couldn't get it to work.
