For the $2k it costs, you can probably put an Alpine (or other) system. I was thinking about investing in one of those Head Units that has the retracting 6.5" - 7" screen along with AV inputs. I figured it'll play DVD's right out of the Head Unit, and I can use the AV inputs for either a DVD Nav System (not sure this works, but I don't see why it wouldn't?) or a PS2/Xbox, or both.
Anyone have any thoughts on why this wouldn't work? I figure you can get a lot more bang for your buck this way. Depending on the HeadUnit you buy, you're looking at spending $2-2.5k I figure, installed ... but you get to keep your cubby hole and you can always take it with you if you change cars.
The In-Z-Car-PC is an option as well.

$1995 for Navi
$300-$500 for amp
$250-$500 for Speaker
$75-$100 for acessories
$150-$250 for installation
At Minimum, I would have cost me about $3,000 and that just using OK System.

Dude! Do what I did in my last car. and am gonna be doin in the Z...
Put an LCD in place of where the stock Nav goes... build a small compuer out of the Shuttle PC casing.. run Co-Pilot software... then you will have a DVD player and can hook up a PS2 as well

And Amp, speaker, accessories, OPTIONAL. There are ways to put directly into stock.

I disagree with your pricing for an aftermarket nav. You do not need some of the parts you listed, and it can be done for much less than $3K.
My install ended up being...
$900 for Pioneer DVD Nav (EBAY)
$280 or so for Farenheit Screen (EBAY)
$100 for mounting brackets and random accessories
$300 for installation
I still have the BOSE stereo, everything else is separate.
Oh, thread moved also.

I have taken my Z apart several times while working on my CarPC project.
Apparently there are differences in the wiring between the navi and non-navi Z's.
It is NOT impossible to correct this, but it would be prohibitively expensive.
The factory navigation is NOT worth $2k!
The motorized navi door can be bought and installed seperately (by yourself) without the need to buy the whole navigation system.
Does anyone know the part # for the motorized navigation door?
Has anyone with a 2004 motorized navigation door taken their console apart?
Can they write down all of the part numbers of all of the motorized parts?

If you paid 2K for the factory nav its time to get a rope and find a sturdy beam up in the attic... the list is ~1600 you should be stripping that straight out of the price you offered them as a gimmie, all options on a car are gimmies. just make the dealer 3-5% profit off their base cost (invoice - dealer holdbacks) and you'll get the deal ( after the closer goes back and forth 4-5 times saying how hes losing money
)
