Default Stock Head Unit FacePlate Coating Question

I have some vertical scratches on my head unit. I have the Radio/CD Player/6 CD Changer version of the Bose system. The scratches appear to have only affected the coating on the faceplate. There's one spot where it looks like the coating has been completely removed, revealing a gloss black coating beneath.

Has anyone here actually removed the coating on their head unit to refinish it? If so, do the labels come off (white lettering) with the coating or are they a part of the undercoating as well? I'm hoping they are beneath the coating as I plan to remove the coating and refinish the head unit with something more durable.

Thanks
