Rear speakers dead - any advice?
Hi all,
I have a 2004 350z coupe with the base (non-Bose) audio system, no nav. I've replaced the factory head with an aftermarket. It's been working fine for years but now the rear speakers have stopped working. I pulled the head and it's producing a signal to the rear speakers so it's not the head.
I've checked the wiring diagrams but I can't figure out if this system has a rear speaker amp even thought it's not a bose system. Can anyone suggest what I should do next? Where is the rear amp, if any?
Thanks!
Jim

I do have the manual and it seems to say that the non-Bose system still has a rear speaker amp. I'm hoping someone can verify that for me in case I'm misreading the manual, and can tell me where it is in the car.
Thanks

the speakers are total crap, theres no amp, and they should simply be replaced.. i do not doubt that your wiring is 100% fine and its the speakers.
all of them should actually be replaced.. they are literaly the worst speakers ever put into a car.

Aren't the rear speakers worthless anyway? I had always thought they might as well be disconnected... and the door speakers carry 100% of the sound.
I'm no audio expert though.

The stock rear speakers provide fill, which is what rear speakers are supposed to do. They're pretty weak, but they do provide some sound.

exactly! It gets tiring reading posts saying the rears are useless and don't bother with them. They're not in the greatest location, but they do have a purpose.

This is a useless posting. Please refrain from posting useless information which unfortunately you frequently do. People who do not visit the sight regularly may be confused by your messages.

The rear speakers were both dead. I guess I drove them a little too hard! They are really, really cheap speakers. I did remove and replace them with a pair of Kicker DS65. They were less thank $70 at Frys. Probably the best $70 I ever spent on the car! I used the following post as guidance. It has plenty of pics on disassembly:

I read somewhere that some speakers are not flush enough to use the factory grills. I didn't want to get into modifying the plastic pieces so I made sure I got speakers that did not protrude too much. These speakers fit fine with no modifications to the plastic or to the metal (other than removing small metal tangs that may have been used to hold the original speakers in place before they were screwed in).
Thanks for the help!

Ha! In addition to my Z, I have 2 old British sports cars (1976 Triumph TR6 and 1978 Spitfire). I depend on lots of advice from folks on the net and I know how frustrating it is to find a thread that talks about a problem without giving a complete solution. So, I do what I can!
