Nexus 7 Custom Tablet Install (Factory Navi Look)
I have my gps hardwired to the red power wire from the head unit wiring harness, however, when I turn on the car ,during the ignition phase, the screen stutters on and off because the power is being cut out as the car is turning on...
So I'm looking for elsewhere to hardwire it to that will only turn on when the key is set to ignition but won't cut power during ignition start up. My dash cam is currently wired to the fuse box, for the SES light, which stays on during the ignition phase, so no stuttering, but not sure if I should hardwire the navigation to it as well...
^^ External amplifiers typically have a power-on delay built-in to avoid popping the speakers when turning on the system. It sounds as though that is causing the problem you are experiencing.
To correct your problem, simple tap into an IGN switched power line (it will be a red wire) before it goes to the H/U harness.

Hey Spike, that's actually how I have it set up. I hooked the gps unit's car adapter to a female cigarette adapter and hooked up the power wire to the red wire on the head unit's harness

What wire or where did you hardwire this to?

Spike100 mentioned the exact way I tapped into the ignition, using the red switched 12v ignition wire. I used it to wire in a second cigarette charger port under the dash (I hate visible wires). Seems you done something similar. Another option maybe to use a relay. This would primarily involve the constant 12v yellow wire for power, a ground and, a trigger wire that is only active when the ignition is on. Though this seems like a round-a-bout way of accomplishing what the red switched ignition wire already does. Its just a suggestion that may help. Sorry for the late response.

Well shoot… I was hoping that would be your fix. You have done everything correctly (using the device’s power plug to properly step down from 12 volts, powered off an IGN switched wire, etc.).
You describe a situation that I think needs correction since it could damage your device. I wonder if there isn’t a problem with the device itself, its step-down converter, or the power wire. It could be a simple as a bad ground or power connection on that add-on female socket connector; or the female connector is faulty..
If all of the above fails to show a problem, you will need to bench test the device. I use a 12v converter to bench test my devices before installation. It would be helpful to test the device and its converter if that’s possible.

yep, mine done finally

It was hard to get the right shape

All parts ready...

Two parts on the bottom are used for construction under nexus, so I wrapped it only for surface protect.

I bought ESP(TCS in US version) button, after wrapping I use it as Nexus power button. Between heated seat switches it fit perfectly.

now, I must change a radio unit but this in future..
@sincere85: Thanks for inspiration

Pawel, the install looks great. I'm glad to see others using this option. And yes the surround shape does take a little time to get right. I would like to get more info on how you wired up the external power button? The main reason I designed my mount with a magnetic plate was to get access to the power button if necessary. Is it extended via the micro usb port?

I made the mount bracket & frame somewhat simultaneously. But the bracket position & angle dictated the frame surround. I then did a mock up of the frame out of cardboard. Mostly everything is made of mdf. Its very secure, I went a little overboard on the bracket because my coilovers are set fairly stiff. I'll see if I can find some pics. Sorry, I've been away for a while.

Also, very detailed information is coming soon. My engineering design professor is allowing me to use this as my final project. So, a improved design, 3D models, specs, and parts list of everything will be included. If all goes well, I may be able to get the frame surround 3D printed.
I will also be looking into the requirements to get multiple units produced. Thanks for the interest.

Bro.. can u get at me over private message and tell me exactly what you did to get power cycles like this? I don't need spoon fed as I'm good w this stuff too...but id like to hear the basics of your wiring before I buy this gear.. thanks a TON!
haevnt heard from the OP, but i also bought a 2nd gen Nexus and the software as lsited above.. is anyone on this thread still actively that i can contact w questions as i build my tabelt in?
I just upgraded to 10 gig and mobiel hotspot on my cell so this should be cool.
