I like messing with the audio, and here is something I did recently with the 350Z. It's a 2003 Touring, with the Bose option.
The first thing done was to fix the relay on the sub amp, since it was playing that on / off every second pothole. But then I wanted to improve it a bit, and went on by buying a used radio on ebay. It came in the original box, all cables, manual, beautiful. It's a Kenwood excelon DPX791BH; it has a very good sound quality, 3 pre-outs with 4V each (important to connect with the Bose Amp). I even added Sirius to it, with the antenna at the middle of the dash.
The idea was to add a decent stereo without spending much money (fancy units would start at $300, and then I would be compelled to add a backup camera....).
And went on to install it in the car. The reason I took it is because it works with 0.5 ohms (same impedance as the OEM sub), can pack 200W RMS, plenty for the original sub, and doesn't need any additional wiring. But I ran the sub RCAs from the radio to it. This way I can control the sub level myself, and bypass the Bose's level control.
I can say that the base is much improved. It almost (I said almost) punches as an aftermarket sub in the trunk, without any additional wiring or using the minimum real state.
Here are a few pics of the new professional "package". I've even reused the same OEM connector, attached to the new amp cable. I had to reduce the gains on the amp quite a bit, since the OEM sub started to distort. No electronics or gimmicks, just the old fashion ear. If there is a next step, there would be to add a 0.5ohm sub at the same position, like this one: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206CWR....html?tp=68872. But not inclined to spend the money on this now.
