Default 350Z - 3D printer speaker mounts

Hi guys, thought I'd share my home made speaker mounts.

I recently bought a set of Focal ES 165K to replace my rubbish Polk DB6501s I've been using for years. One of my budget regrets!

At least I'd done the installation right back then in 2016. Focal insulation mat against the outer skin, speaker baffles and sound insulation on the inner skin.

I used plywood for the brackets and used the stock mounting locations.

Problem was when I went to install the Focals, they were too deep and hit the door glass (common problem I'm now aware). Thankfully I'd been learning 3D printing so I started prototyping...

I originally tried to keep the plywood and mount the bracket to that, but the screw locations made it a bit of a pain to also get the right position for the speaker itself.

I ended up designing a mount that attaches straight to the door:

It took a few iterations to get there. It's pretty tight with the dimensions of the speaker and the window glass/door card, but I got it to work in the end.

I used a seal strip between the speaker and the mount and then added a foam seal on top, cut to shape to mate with the doorcard/grill.

The only other change was to shave a little off the back of the grill. I don't think there was contact, but just in case.

All done!

Edit: Thought I'd add some photos of my home-built sealed sub housing. I'd sized it to fit in the stock sub location.

Now I'm just dealing with dramas of an ATOTO S8. I know it's a Chinese head unit, but the favourable reviews and no real mention of issues lead me to believe it's good value. It may actually be good value, but it's introduced a s**t-tonne of static into the speakers. That's both bench testing with speakers wired directly to the unit and also installing in-car, wired to my Pioneer amp. Same static, just slightly louder in car...

Focal, nice! That's one thing I don't care for spending a lot on, my system is VERY basic. I'm on all stock wiring, with cheap components up front and in back but without rear tweeters, and a powered sub. When I drive my Z I listen to music but the main music I care about is the sound of the engine/exhaust.

I like the choice of engine or music, but the latter more for longer distance trips, especially with the missus.

I'm a bit of an AV junkie in general, which is why it was a bit out of character to go with the Polks.

I removed my rear drivers back when I did the first installation. They felt/feel unnecessary.

Once I get the head unit sorted, that'll be enough for the Z.

Funny enough I'm into good looking video and audio outside of cars. For home I have a full Atmos system but for cars it's whatever is "good enough".
I've done Polk, Boston, and now Kenwood. As long as it's full range I'm happy, the DD will get a Helix system upgrade that keeps the factory speakers but adds a DSP, AMP and 2 small woofers.
Do you think there is a way to make adapters like you did but offset and angled to better match the card hole?

With shallower speakers, like the Polks, you could definitely get a little closer but I'm not sure it's possible to get them roughly centred of the door card hole. Even if you could, you'd have to create a new grill or drill out all of the fake/closed holes in the stock grill.

Never understood why Nissan decided to make the hole so far off-centre of the speakers. Half the speaker just fires at the door card...

Gotcha, I actually did drill one of mine out....the other....I'll do it eventually, but it's quite annoying lol

3d printing is magic. I've printed so many things that needed a fix. Draw the part, click print, walk away and a few hours later, voila.

Hi I too want to buy the focals, do you have a 3d file for me so I can print this myself. I am a newbe on 3d printing.

Regards
Roger

This is a very clean install and those mounts add a wealth of speaker selections. But just as an alternative, I used Focal 6.5 *shallow mount* speakers in the doors. No spacer needed and while probably not as clean sounding as their regular depth speakers (which I used on the rear deck), they were worlds above my stock and first set of Rockford (or Kickers, I forget) replacements in terms of sound clarity, bass response. Focals are still my top choice in speakers since I first heard them a dozen years ago.

OK, let's digress here a minute.

After many decades of being the only member of my family to not need glasses, I've been hit with the need. So yes, probably getting bifocals.

But ya, doc confirms that I have cataracs which screws up my night vision in the face of oncoming headlights.

I resisted the jokey response about my Rincon.Continental <===not lacist, thass my people. .

Hi mate, I was sure I had the file on Thingiverse but maybe it was removed? Anyway you can use this 3mf file- https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oCd...ew?usp=sharing

I'd recommend printing at 100% infill, for maximum rigidity, which I didn't do previously. I'll redo mine again eventually.
