Default mounting depth of door woofer

Ive seen a bunch of instances where brackets were fabricated to clear the magnet from the window, but what is the max depth allowed w/in the door w/o causing window/grill problems. Reason I ask is I like the new alpine SPX-177R components, but 2.8" depth seems to be pushing it. Any thoughts ...

Here's a thought, If you buy a one inch spacer and attach it to the peaker bracket that comes with the speakers, it SHOULD fit. I have not done this yot, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Any other opinions? Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I am planning to do this with these speakers.

The thing you should be concerned with is the magnet hitting the forward edge of the window when it is rolled completely down. There isn't much space depth-wise there so be careful. I used the original speaker housing as a spacer (at least 1") and which keeps the speaker from hitting, but I would guess there is only about 1/4" clearance, so a larger magnet may have problems.

Stupid question here - do you buy spacers or make them? My first though would be to make some MDF rings.

Yeah that would probably be easy enough. You will notice though that the screw holes for mounting to the door frame are spaced very wide. But you can use the original OEM speaker as a template to trace on MDF. The MDF may need to be very thick like 1". Or simply use the original speaker as the spacer as many here have done. Use a dremel to carve out the cone and any remaining interfering plastic. The original speaker works really well for most speakers, you may want to cover up the holes on the sides though.

Is the original speaker an inch thick?

The original speaker has been molded into a spacer like plastic surround that bolts to the door with three screws. What you are doing is using the surround as a spacer, it is about an inch or maybe a little more. When using the original spacer or a custom one you can tinker with the mounting holes and move the speaker up and right/left a little more if you want. The big issue is you don't want to hit the tip of the window with the magnet

Installed Infinity 60.5cs yesterday using the method mentioned ... using the stock ring and had no problem with window hitting.

I've been wondering about this since I want to install these. I guess I need to measure how big the magnet is. If the spacer needs to be more than an inch is this still feasable?

With the stock speaker as a spacer there is not much room left between the front of the speaker and the inner door panel. In fact I had to use an x-acto to cut a little of the door's plastic to make mine fit right.

You can make the spacer out of MDF, But you can buy the spacers for $12 bucks from crutchfield, The screws are spread widely apart but you can use an adapter bracket for that as well. I believe alpine will include the brackets with the speakers, all you will need is the spacers, if not just buy the brackets too.

I think these two together would work perfectly....

My speakers are 62mm (2.44in) mounting depth and to install correctly I have them spacered out 1.5" from the door. I've centered my speakers to the speaker opening instead of leaving them low and off-centered like most do around here. A 71mm deep speaker like the Alpine SPX (btw - I'd really look at other speakers) is going to be very hard to mount in the door.

I moved mine up a little closer to the openning too by chiselling out the holes in the stock speaker (spacer). The problem is, the more you bring it up the closer you get to the glass edge behind. And if you try to space it too much you hit the door plastic in front.

I've finally removed my door plastic cover. The improvements are tremendous. I use my speaker grills for protection and most people have commented it looks fine in the car.

i'm confused...if you remove the plastic speaker cover on our doors, will that allow me to install the alpine spx's with no problem? is the problem installing speakers mainly because we want to keep an oem look and that presents a window hitting problem?

thanks...and how long does it take a professional to take that plastice grill out?
