Default Alpine 7897 HU and XM ant. Install Pics

This HU was installed as well as my amp and other speakers Thursday. I am very happy with this HU. I have a 7894 in the Tahoe which is very nice as well but this one has many more features and completely hides away when off. A bonus as not to attract would-be thieves.

Here is where the Terk antenna is mounted. So far, reception is the same as it was on the roof of the truck.

(yes, I know, it's dirty.....insert "wash me" here)

HU straight on w/metra kit for those who haven't had a good look at it yet.

Also, for those that aren't familiar with the Alpine line, they have three or four tilt angles to choose from on the fly. I don't think you'd really need to tilt these in the Z though.

For those of us without a stock nav, I think we could use the GPS sensor location as the mounting point of a XM receiver. XM should do fine through plastic correct? The stock GPS sensor is on the furthest part of the dash, directly in front of the driver. The panel behind the instrument cluster pulls off and there's a little pocket right where the dash meets the front glass. I ASSUME this area is present in all the cars, and is simply only used if you have nav.

I think a XM antenna would fit there, but I plan on putting my aftermarket GPS receiver there.

Anybody with the shop manual, it's clearly listed under the nav section.

Nice HU by the way, it's the one I would like to eventually get, but it doesn't fit with the theme of the Z interior much. Where did you mount the actual XM box?

Nice job on the HU selection, it looks great. Would you be able to get a picture of when the unit is in its "hidden" mode.

There was concern in some other posts that because of the motorization of the front plate that the unit had to stick out obtrusively.

Thanks.

Yeah, I read that post a while back but there's nothing to worry about. There's plenty of room. Here's a shot with it tucked under while off.

Don't think I understand what you're asking. The Metra kit has a few options of installation. All I know is that I wanted the pocket under the hu. There were a few trim rings (*I think*) that came with the kit but as far as I know, they installed it the only way it would work.

Default Nice job...

My install is nearing completion...finally. It looks like I will have to swap out my HU to get the sound I want so I will be looking into some head unit options this week. Where did you get your metra kit, and how long did it take to get it ?

I checked with my local CIrcuit City for a kit, and of course they didn't have it in stock. They can order it for me, but I hate dealing with them, and they gave me a 2-3 week lead time...so I need another source.

I am considering the 7897, or 7995 for the HU. I like the aluminum accents on the 7995, so that may be the one. I also need to work on the fqactory nav integration, but I think I have that portion figured out.

I will be posting pics of my install soon, once I get my sub enclosure finished and my HU issues figured out...
