The case comes with a dc plug...they supply a cable that converts DC to AC like the in notebooks. This was one of those things where I had an inverter sitting around, tried it, and it worked.

Just throwing some ideas out there...I'm sure improvements can be made and that's why I'm posting this.

Your casetronics case has a dc to dc power supply on it. Why are you using an inverter? you can hook it up directly to your cars electrical system!!

If you want a small PC with every output and a professional build look here:

http://www.cappuccinopc.com/

Everything from the TX1 all the way up to the P4 systems can fit in your hand. Footprint of a CD case.

Well the outside is ground.

The cappuccinopc is small, but not worth the price. you can build your own for 1/2 the price. and it wouldn't be that much bigger.

Black wall base trim from Homedepot is a great material to use to cut out a replacement piece for the cubby hole liner if you don't want to mess with the original piece.

Looks better than the original piece IMO.

Default Optic cable

abz123, you were the original inspiration for me to try to run an optical cable so that I wouldn't have to drill the center console. It's now almost time to do the final install and I just want to make sure I'm still on the right track.

Basically, you took a regular fiber optic cable, cut the plugs off, stuffed one end near the IR sensor on the monitor and ran the other end to somewhere inside the cabin?

I was thinking of having the end come out in one of the air vents, but I think your location alongside one of the seats would probably be more straightforward.

I know this whole optic cable thing works, number one because it makes sense, number two because you've done it. I'm just a little nervous I guess.

Thanks.

Mine works great.

I just cut off one end because it was too bulky. I wanted to get the end pointed directly at the sensor. Test it throughly and then secure it.

Good luck with the install and enjoy the navagation system.

I love the computer system. One of the best things I've put together in a while. I use it everyday.....the radio is being neglicted. People are always peeking into the car checking it out. A co-worker just got one for himself.

Boot up time is about 45 sec to 1 minute. I have the bios set to restart the computer automatically if cut off suddenly. I normally do NOT do a 'proper shut-down' (Bill Gates is hating me) because I'm just to impatient. Windows 2000 PRO doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Normally, just close all programs and turn off engine. When I turn the engine back on, the computer starts back up automatically.

7" farenheit (Non VGA).

No cutting involved. It's a snug, good fit.

To install just the LCD by itself, I would say took me about 45 minutes. Spent most of the time looking over diagrams, prepping, trying to figure out where to run the wires. I had a really good idea what I wanted to do. Expect between 1 to 3 hours all together (dismantling, installing, and 'remantling') depending on how handy you are.

The first link has a link to Scafremon's guide on how to take the center console apart.

This site has some great resources. Do I search and you should be able to find just about anything you need.

I bought the Farenheit 7001 a few months ago off Ebay for $276. With shipping it was like $291.

Some guy with the ID USAVEMONEY2 or something to that effect. Don't think he is selling them any more.

How is your TV reception with the antenna under the strut like that? Can you get anything when you are rolling or do you pretty much have to stop to get any decent reception?

I've tried several locations and the best reception I got was either flat on the floor or on the strut bar. Reception was not very good on the hatch window...and it looked really bad too.

Reception depends on location and inteference....how close you are to a tower.

I've gotten perfect reception going 70 down a cleared parkway... and really bad reception sitting still at a stop light around a lot of buildings. Usually if you are moving the recepetion will break up slightly.

Mines not a diversity antenna though...diversity antennas are suppose to be a little better....but it still an antenna so don't expect satellite quality. Some tuners comes with several antenna plugs that you can plug mutliple antennas in that will allow you to place antenna at several locations around the car for better reception.

I have used the tuner like twice in the last month and a half....waiting for football season again.

abz123:

Did you end up staying with the via 800 motherboard? I thought you maybe tried both the 800 and the 9000. Curious if you continued to encounter problems with the power supply, even after using different memory and the 2.5" HD.

Yes. I tried both and still have both. I stuck with 800 for the car. Put a bigger P.S. on the 9000 that I'm using in the house. The 9000 is very power hungry and power requiements was not spec right.

I never switch the memory on it. The 9000 was better with the 2.5" harddrive but started to act up a few days later....even with the slim DVD and 2.5" HD. Because of inadequate power, it would require you to push the power button a few times to boot it up. Too much of a hassle. I needed it to boot up at power up with no buttons pushed. IMO, the 800 is definately the PC for the car...not as many options but very reliable and releases a lot less heat.

Man..... I was all set on the 9000, hoping that your sig was a typo. Maybe aggie has had better luck withhis 9000, if he has it running already.

I've got a shopping cart at an online store filled with what I thought I had decided upon, but now, I don't think I'm going to 'submit order'.

I've never had this much trouble buying a computer before...lol
