Default Running In?

Hello Guys and Gals,

I am picking my new toy tomorrow sometime and was wondering what "running in" procedure everyone has (will be) followed?

Do you stick to what the manual says or do you have your own thing?

I have never followed the manual running in procedure with any of my cars or bikes. I have always found it best to drive/ride them at the start the way you intend to further down the road (no pun intended).

Obviously you dont be silly for the first couple of thousand k's but you still have to give it a rev. Lets be honest how many people can resist pushing a little harder on the go peddle!!

Thoughts?

I picked mine up last friday and they didn't mention the running in bit until I read the book after 200kms - so I did a number of foot down (auto) sudden starts and stops demmoing to friends. I'm going to do it by the book now but i figure that the demo models that the dealers use for test drives would get thrashed so I'm not too worried.

I don't think it makes much difference either way, just don't thrash it for the first few hundred kms and it should be fine.

FWIW the procedure I followed was first 500km kept under 4k rpm and mostly under 3k rpm. Next 500km those rpm point go up by 500 rpm. Next 500km up another 500 rpm etc. I'm up to about 2850km now but haven't touched redline. Must have gone close a couple of times though.

cheer up guys,

I've red lined the car upteen times...i'm serious. Probably about 100 times in the last 4500kms.

I've raced about 5 cars...hit the rev limiter once! lol, what a shock that was!

I'm following the break-in idea that you NEED to rev the car early in the game...first 200kms. The car has been magic from day one as far as performance in concered.

If you are worried about revs, don't be! There are a few ECUs that are on the way that will move the rev limiter to 7000rpm. We're way in the safe zone.

Whats super important is to keep to 98 oct fuel from a reputable place.

We'll thats my opinion on breaking in.

I have now 9800k's on the clock, I ran it in as per the book for the first 500km then drove normally with the occational run up into the 5000rpm range, I also gave it full throttle on slight uphill grades for about 20 seconds to help bed in the piston rings, the main thing is not to be to soft on it or thrash the crap out of it then at 5000k's change to Mobil 1 oil.

Just one other tip, I now disconnect the battery once a week to reset the ECU this stop it from detuning the mods, I'll get the ECU re-flashed/programmed once the new programs come out to fix this feature/problem.

I drove normally during the break in except for no WOT until after 1000km and even then only to around my rpm points. Then again how often do you really go WOT in the city.

I also changed to a full synth oil at 1000km first service.

David do you have anythign that really proves the detuning theory on the ECU? I've seen evidence both ways so far and remain confused and unconvinced.

I've had my car for a week now and have been keeping very close to the 4000RPM recommendation, but I've been going upto 110km now. I'm on 700kms now so I'm going to start pushing a little more.

My opinion is that if there was such an issue with the first 1500kms, then why is the first service at 10000kms?

Nevertheless, I won't go too hard until a couple of thousand kms.

Harry - sleepless night for you?
