Default Oils aint Oils

Hi there !

I am looking to do an oil change this weekend and wanted to see what everyone is using or if you have heard any recommendations or otherwise.

I always used Motul in my R33 so I am looking to go down that path again.

Nathan, if your online what do you use in yours? Gear box?

Thanks
Mike

Mike,

I see that most of the guys in the states use/like the RedLine brand of oil for the gearbox and diff. Its available in Aus from www.capa.com.au, you con order online, but don't use synthetic oil in both the diff and gearbox that's a recommendation from Nathan.

I used Redline once in a previous car. Seemed like good stuff but you really can't tell from just one use.

FWIW I'm using Castrol Formula R 5W-30

I use Mobil-1.

I will switch to synthetic after 10,000. For the first 10k will stick with Nissan over expensive cooking oil and then probally switch to castrol 5w/30 as I used to run in my wrx.

Is there a difference between the symthetic oils anyway?

mob-1 and castrol are pretty much identical.

Don't let Castrol or Mobil hear you say that. They've spent billions in development.

FWIW I've always found every engine I've tried them on is quieter on Castrol than on Mobil. Other than that they're identical for all intents and purposes.

I used mineral oil up to 5k and then changed to Mobil 1 which I have used in all my cars for the past 10 years. Without a doubt, once changing to Mobil 1 my engine revved more freely to red line.

I am using Castrol synthetic in gearbox and diff. Gear changes are smoother, particularly 1st to 2nd which was notchy when cold on standard oil.

Besides the fact that Mobil-1 has been around longer than just about every other synthetic, here's what sold me: it comes as original equipment on 'Vettes and Ferraris. I mean if Ferrari puts it in their cars as they leave the factory, that's good enough for me.

I think you mean Porsche, I believe Ferrari uses Shell but I could certainly be wrong.

Could be... :-)

I thought I remembered reading that Ferrari used it too, but my memory has messed up things smaller than this. I did notice that Mercedes/AMG uses it too. These guys hand-build every single engine. If they care that much about those engines, and Mobil-1 is what they use, I think that's saying a lot.

We use Motul 5w 40 synthetic in the motor of the race car as they are our lubricant sponsors.
The motor is apart now and is showing no signs of wear in the vital parts despite over 6000 full on kl,s.
We used synthetic oil in the gearbox for the Bathurst 24hr race in November last year & the syncros on 2nd,3rd & 4th started to play up quite early in the race.
We stripped the box down after the race & there was considerable wear on the syncros.
Nissan only recomend a GL4 oil for the gearbox & I have a theory that the synthetic is to good for the gearbox & is resisting the friction that is needed for syncro cones to do there job.
We have been racing this year with just a budget brand GL4 oil in the box with no signs of trouble. But I must say the synthetic oil has a slicker shift when the box is cold.
Whith regards to the diff we use Motuls top synthetic oil as we have a Cusco LSD fitted that needs this type of oil to opperate.
To summerise I would use a 0w-30 or 5w-30 synthetic oil in my road car motor & leave the factory fill oil in the gearbox & diff, there can be no arguments then if you have a warranty issue in the future.

You know my mechanic said exactly the same thing when I asked about changing the tranny and diff oil. He said it's not uncommon for dealers to reject warranty if the oil on these has been changed to something other than the exact specified oil.

FWIW on full synths in the tranny it seems to be common on modern cars that it doesn't work too well. Seems to be too slippery for the syncros to work properly.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

Question

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I need some advice on oil for my particular area. I live in North Queensland where the temp ranges from 10 to 40 degrees, but most of the year it's mid 20s to mid 30's. I have done 3000 ks so far.

I was going to use Mobile 1, but wasn't sure which viscosity to get given I live in a high temperature climate.

Mobil 1 5W50
Mobil 1 10W30
Mobil 1 0W40 Trisynthetic

Cheers Bev.

Bev, I think any of them would be OK but personally I'd try the 5W-50 first.

Castrol 5W20 after 10K on dino oil. The comment about gearbox oils is interesting - my first to second change is clunky when cold ( well more than normal ) and would love to get rid of this. The waranty issue is a bit scarry however, if mine doesn't improve ( and Nissan service reckon it will improve (BS?)) it will be back for a service fix.
