Default Braking Question

Guys, I had this issue when braking hard this afternoon and it didnt sit well with me and I wonder if anyone else has had similar, or perhaps someone can tell me why?

I was travelling along at Warp Factor 9 (about 6Krpm in 5th), came up to a almost 90 degree turn and had to do some hard braking and I near had to pull over and change my leather seat cover.

The car started to move all over the road, not braking traction just getting really "squirmy". The best way I can describe it for those who have ridden a motorcyle at a race track, after a few hot laps your tyres get up to temperature and move around a lot. Im used to a bike doing it, wasnt so confindence inspiring in the Z.

Sorry if I havent described it well but I hope you get the picture.

Any clues?

As always

Was there any sounds coming from the brakes? Any ABS triggering?

Were the brakes real hot? I find them to be pretty shithouse unless they are real hot.

I don't speed that much around town but i have had to brake hard from around 100km/h and that was no problem. Sounds like you were going way faster.

The event would be similar to the braking at the track after the straights (most i've seen have a 90deg)... It can get a bit hairy when you have understeer and need to come on the brakes hard. Is that kind of what happened?

Harry, I remember having a similar incident at Wakefield (you should come to the next one BTW) going down the straight, doing about 165-170. Hard on the anchors and heel - toe into 3rd gear. The rear end started to wobble about and I thought WTF!!!! So I put it down to a smidgeon of compresssion lock up, getting into 3rd too early. Perhaps it wasn't compression lockup as I thought back then, or perhaps it was and you did something similar. Did you downgear a little too early watching the corner loom large???

Gentlemen, thanks for the respones.

No there were no noises, other than parts of my body attaching themselves to the seat.

I only change down to 4th whilst braking and this happened so I didnt go down any more gears as I was more concerned about keeping the car on the road.

It wasnt a compression lock up and there was nothing else going on, just the front end wobbling all over the place. It wasnt understeer as I was braking before the corner and the car was straight, that is, I wasnt turning into the corner I was just getting ready to turn in.

The brakes werent real hot as I wasnt on a fast lap, it was just a few sweepers and then one really long straight .

The only thing I can put it down to is the crappy tires??

That must've been about 200kph. I'd say most likely crappy tyres. I had a little movement at Wakefield but nothing that concerned me.

Matt, you maths are just about right, I was a little over your estimate.

I tell you what, it wasnt that bad its just that Ive never had a car do that before.

lol

200km/h on our shithouse streets? Might have been some oil on the road, tyres, loose debris... anything really. Might have been airborne?

This was a road "deep" in the country. There wasnt anything on the road nor around.

Never thought it might have been "touch down" though!

Have done loads of hard braking from 200+ on standard touring brakes. All good - until they were really hot one day - then I felt the same body attaching itself to the seat experience - they felt like they were grabbing at about 50 %. Shot right off the end of Calder's main strait at about 120. Have done tests on straits from 200+ to see how quick I could pull up to a complete stop - awesome - no probs at all.
